Why do black metal fans always call Cradle of Filth goth? Don't they know we don't want them either?

why do you call COF black metal? what gave you that idea anyway? what do you define as being black metal? COF doesnt even claim to be black metal.

Because they are. Or were, at least. While Cradle of Filth push the boundaries of the black metal genre (which isn't really saying a whole lot), many of their early songs are undeniably black metal.



Pretentious poetic lyrics with references to mythology, check. Outrageous stage theatrics, check. Unintelligible shrieking vocals, check. They also claim musical influence from Emperor and Venom.



A few things most black metal bands seem to have in common is their ideology, black metal is consistently antichristian and many bands incorporate mythological (particularly Norse) themes into their lyrics. Black metal is also raw and minimalistic often with only one guitarist playing in standard tuning. Facepaint, leather, spikes, and illegible logos with horizontal symmetry are always to be expected.

When was that. Maybe COF no longer claim to be black metal, because as you said their earlier stuff was.

exactly. i heard that their demo stuff was black metal, but i never heard any of that.
