Black metal is an impressive but largely pretentious genre. Most of their lyrics are insufferably hackneyed and sometimes downright ridiculous. However, their sound is often beautiful and majestic. My favorite Black Metal bands include:

Emperor
Dimmu Borgir
Immortal

I also like some of the later albums by Bathory (Nordlands), and some Mercyful Fate, but I haven't quite heard enough of either of them.

CoF is not black metal. they don't even claim to be. doesnt even say on metal-archives (which is inaccurate most of the times). but for some reason they have a huge fanbase that claims they are. most people with a sense of genre would just call them extreme goth metal. and im not so sure about Dimmu Borgir.

the ones that i like are Goatwhore, DragonLord, Vinterland, and a thrash/black hybrid called Toxic Holocaust.
