Since Death Magnetic is one of the best Metallica albums I have heard since the Black Album (the last very good Metallica album), I am going go with Ride the Lighting from 1984.

"Whom the Bell Tolls" is still one of Metallica's best songs ever and the title track actually feels you are riding the lighting when you listen to it. "Fade to Black" is Metallica's best slow song ever. The rest of the tracks just are the best, I even liked Kurt Hammett's guitar work in "The Call of Kuhtu"!

I chose "And Justice For All..." but "Master of Puppets" and "The Black Album" were close seconds. For me, they define Metallica. 8) All three are excellent, and are the only Metallica albums that I listen to anymore. The other albums are OK but I never really got into them like I did the other three. And like you said, "The Black Album was the last, very good Metallica album". Newer Metallica, is just not the same Metallica that it used to be.

Much love for Load, though.

Until Metallica decided that they needed to be money grubbers and help screw over downloaders, I never had a problem with them. I just can't listen to a band that supports suing individuals for more money than they have. I just can't.

Confession: I despise this band. never gave them much of a listen because simply their band members (especially the singer) are such a turn off for me. Hetfields openly propaganding the death penalty was the one thing that made me really turn my back on them. I just dislike their singer, their attitude. This makes me completely uninterested to check their albums. Apart from "Until it sleeps" I also have not heard many good songs of them, of course being exposed to only their single releases. But as those dont make me excited + my dislike for their band members, make me so uninterested to check out this band. I may miss on something good, but the temptation to buy an album of theirs is simply not there.

Also, for a metal band, they have the silliest possible name you could come up with. But being a fan of bands such as The Smiths and Echo & The Bunnymen, I will refrain from commenting on that as my own favourites have not very creative band names neither.

Damn, that was a hard decision... My fave Metallica songs are Unforgiven II, Shoot Me Again, Fade To Black, and Welcome Home (Sanitarium). Obviously I couldn't decide because of that... Also, I've only heard one of the songs off of Death Magnetic (the day that never comes), so I can't say much about that... And the only two good songs on St. Anger are St. Anger and Shoot Me Again. I eventually went with Load, though because it has the highest amount of good songs on it.

Also, as a side note: I don't think it's right to judge a music off of what the artist is like. You should judge a music by its sound and texture. I believe you are a horrible person if you decide not to listen to a music just because the band is basically a bunch of a-holes or because they support or don't support different things. As a sidenote, I firmly support the death penalty in cases of wrongful murder (REGARDLESS of the age) and child molestation.

For all you know, people in many of your favourite bands could have done horrible things or believed things you strongly disagree with. And you effectively give royalties to them whenever you buy their records. Honestly I feel that holding personal stances like this (similarly to Metallica opposing Napster and Yusuf Islam saying he would have Salman Rushdie burned) is an unreasonable standard to hold.
