Special Ed Teacher Faces Felony Charges of Cruelty, Risk of Injury to Her Students

A special education teacher at a New Britain school is accued of endangering three of the autistic students in her care. Police say 36-year-old Michelle Campbell taught a class of about ten special needs students in her care, kindergarten through second grade.

Police say a warrant was issued by New Britain Superior Court, charging her with seven felonies involving three of the children, ages five and seven. Campbell faces three counts of risk of injuiry to children and four of cruelty to persons in unspecified incidents last school year. The court ordered the warrants the case to be sealed.

Assistant School Superintendent Ron Jakubowski described Campbell as a veteran teacher with more than five years experience. He says the schools investigated at the time of "an incident" and took action to resolve the matter. He says a parent reported it to police, but says he cannot discuss personnel matters beyond that.

Campbell turned herself in and her bond was set at $5,000. She is due in court Oct 23. She is on paid administrative leave from her position in the school system.

I cannot imagine what she could have done that's so bad that the warrant was ordered sealed. But it's terribly sad to hear about.

Or the warrants are sealed to prevent people from second-guessing the prosecution.

Or the warrants are sealed to protect the kids.

If you are only teaching 10 kids, it won't be rocket science to figure out who your probable victims were. And those kids can be tainted by it, right or wrong, it's uncomfortable for them to know people have this information.

Hmm. I sure wish they could have said what this teacher did.

I can't buy that. The worst thing that can be known about the kids is sexual abuse. Whenever someone is being charged with or even investigated for sexual abuse, their name is all over the media as a sex abuser before the police are done dragging away their computer and gathering evidence that they intend to misuse.

Most likely it is something so piddling that admitting that they arrested someone for it would be embarassing.
