We have the eighties and the nineties for the previous decades, but what will we call the decade from 2000 to 2009? We're getting rather close to the last year of the decade.

We'll let future generations decide that. This is the sort of problem that's best to simply place on the shoulders of someone else before he's even conceived.

VH1 called it the new millenium. I've heard it referred to simply as the 2000's also. I'm sure the decade after that will be the 2010's, then the 2020's then the 2030's etc. until it gets to be about the 2060's or so, and all the people from the 1900's start to get really old, then they will simply be known as the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's and the 1900 years will be known as the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's etc.

In British English I've heard it called the naughties ("naught" being common for "zero" in British English).

I have no idea what a good name would be in American English.

Probably something to do with George Bush, like "The Bush Era".

The Naughts (or the 'oughts, depending) would be correct... as for a descriptor, I wouldn't venture a guess.

The same problem applies with the decade 2010 to 2019. What is THIS called? The "tens". Personally, I still consider it to be the 90s, as Ive heard no new term. In fact, the 90s is a VERY long decade, running from 1990 to 2019...
