The usual suspects are flowers and chocolates but i'm trying to think of something different, something that cant be bought with money.

i'm thinking of writing several love poems on a notebook and just give the notebook as gifts. what do you think?

Valentine's Day is an excuse for people to sell useless stuff to couples. So yeah, being creative will say a lot more than buying any of the typical, boring Valentine crap.

Poetry usually goes over well, I say go for it. As long as it's a decent notebook and not something you dragged out of an old school bag or something.

Oh yes, I 100% agree. We don't even celebrate it, just don't see the point.

Anything handmade (even if it doesn't come out quite right) will receive a good response, because you took the time and the care to make something. You can pick up flowers in under ten minutes. Showing that you put extra time and effort into something...well, it's always worked for me.

I'm with Zasha on the homemade gift idea. And I think your notebook-full-of-poems plan will be a hit, because that's about as personal and unique as it gets.

I'm going the homemade route this V-Day, which is the first time I've ever not been single on the 14th. Since my girlfriend is a bit of a geek and she's an Electrical Engineering student like me, I'll be catering to our mutual interest in electronics and other geekery. Nothing says 'I love you' like taking the time to solder 100 surface-mount 0603 LEDs and dropping resistors... :D

But I'll also pair my homemade gift with the usual box o' chocolates, 'cause everyone loves chocolates.

Well, since we've officially crossed that line, my dirty mind can now express itself freely...

Cunnilingus. That is all...

My idea is a serious one, I take the time to think about these things for about a month and a half in advance. I don't have a girlfriend. But my gift to my friend is a simple digital photo frame pre-loaded with pictures I have taken. I plan on getting about 100 pictures, but I've only got about 5... Might include a reader so my friend can add to the device. But a photo frame pre-loaded with pictures - a nice idea I think.... It has the personal touch of pictures I take myself

If you have that much incidental cash on hand and she'll love it, go for it...

Maybe go the Saturday Night Live route and give her a ---- in a box?

Nah, I agree that novelty is a good idea - you have that much right. However, regarding *her* though, you know her better than we do. What it is matters less than the context between you and her. I mean don't try to go cashless, do take her out or at least get something but the price matters less than what it says as far as what you think of her; it's kind of a sign for where your head is at.

Didn't you just contradict yourself? ---- in a box has been done to death since that particular SNL that it has lost its novelty...

Yeah, that was a joke.
