Right now I'm in the process of writing a paper about Autism. Here's the one-sentence summary:
Autism is a gift from God, not a burden to society.
I need a favor to ask you guys. THe first section of my paper is about how curing autism and the media's portrayal of ASD is wrong. Now I need to get some quotes from you guys. It can be about why and how curing autism is wrong. Better yet, you can quote why some people think a cure is necessary and how they believe everything the media says to them about autism is right.
If you can't give a quote, please link (if you can) some websites where autism is being talked about.
the media is not that wrong in how it portrays autism [some of us are severely autistic with high complex needs and very difficult to adapt to the basics in life regardless of the amount of support and specialist help, some people are profoundly autistic and have a fully working mind, but cant transfer their thoughts out into some other form other than through only behavior-so they get an even worser deal with what is expected of them=lack of].
If the media say it's the autism spectrum/ASD,and focus on one part or one label-that is an unbalanced view, that is the problem.
There needs to be balance and acceptance of every ASDers needs.
An acceptance of autism overall,to show each ASDer as an individual, rather than a label, though in media they cant really show that so they have to stick to some stereotype.
The idea of a cure,or a part cure,is what some Autists want/need,there's many reasons that have led people to that want/need,for some,it's because they're by label-classed as aspie/HF and get refused services automatically, for some it's because they have no quality of life due to the lack of services on offer in their area [which will unlikely change in near future due to lack of funding in councils],for some-they are on the severe end of the spectrum and their autism/high complex needs makes their quality of life a misery.
It should be about choice if there ever happens to be a cure or more likely a part type cure,as everyone knows-its impossible to use one stereotype to fit the entire amount of people on the autism spectrum,
it's like that with the 'cure idea',one stereotype cannot be used on the entire spectrum to say that it's wrong for all,as not everyone has the same choice [to choose it or not to choose] circumstances, needs, severity or QoL.
