Did you find out about AS from a family member?

I made this topic mainly to discuss a neat conversation that came up the other day at my sister's cookout. Back in May 2008 my older sister found this info. on Asperger's Syndrome my mom said oh I think that fits you. I scoffed at the idea at first then I decided to google it etc. and found WP. I believe it fits my behavior alot. I told my Psychiatrist and his response was "Oh you don't have that that's something diagnosed in childhood and even if you did there's no pill for it and this is a place that gives pills. I was like oh then have dropped the topic with him. Well this past weekend my older sister said what's that disorder you have. My mom said Bipolar II (my diagnosis from the Psychiatrist) and my sister said no the Autism one (sorry to offend anyone just repeating what she said) I said Asperger's and I've researched it and think I have it. She said she had forgotten the name of it. She suggested perhaps I see a Psychologist over it but me/mom mention most Psychologist don't take my insurance. Anyway I was so happy she remembered it. She's a family member that seems to be looking out for me alot. I just wanted to share my story and was also curious perhaps some of you found out through family members.

I hope you realise the insanity in this statement. Refusing to diagnose something because "that's not what we do" send alarmbells ringing in my head. Get out of there, that place sounds absolutely unprofessional!

Also, personally I would probably avoid taking pills in the first place, so maybe I'm overreacting here But the fact they say they run on pill prescriptions sounds like they may have struck some kind of deal with a pharmaceuticals (sp?) company or something. At the very least it doesn't sound like they could give an objective diagnosis.

My mother told me I had it when I was 12. I didn't even know what it was back then. I just assumed it meant I have troubles doing my school work.

I had known about AS for a while, but adhered to a rather stereotypical view of it. In 2007-08 it became eveident that my nephew was autistic. I knew a bit about more pronounced autism and i spoke to my mother about this and mymother spoke to my sister and then eventually my nephew was diagnosed with HFA.

I - being me - then began a fanatical research of everything to do with autism and this in turn led me to detailed reading on AS. In fact, that is all i did for months, along with my main special interest. I learn in obsessive clumps like this - everthing about me is autistic and this was never uncovered because of my age, my sex, my family (weird, with a mother who acknowledges just HOW Apsergers she is without accepting a formal dx,) my academic achievements at school where i duxed without effort, and the era I was born in. (1962)

I began to put a lot of pieces together. I am archetypal female AS autistic.

In the past year i have received a formal dx from an autism specialist.

My whole life makes sense. I am pushing towards 50. (well 47 in a few months.)
Better late than never. There is some bitterness about that too.
But now i know who i am and why i have always been the way i have been. I do not want to change anything about myself.

And I do not have to fit anywhere, except inside my own skin.

i was at my cousins graduation party and i was sitting listening to my mp3 player being a loner as usual and i overheard my aunt talking about one of my cousins having it.
and i hardly know him and when i saw him this one time he seemed like he had ADHD.
so i looked it up and i relate to all the symptoms but im not diagnosed yet.
my parents knew and when i saw my aunts again they were talking about him so my dad said outloud that kaitlyn has it too!! !
i was really nervous that they wont believe me and they didnt i started crying and they were saying im not as antisocial as him???
wtf???
they dont even know me???

My parents told me that I was gonna get a diagnosis of it, so yeah. In fact, if they didn't get told of the possibility that I might have had Asperger's then I probably wouldn't have ever heard of it, or even suspected that I had it.

Ya Sjamann I agree. My mom mention he's not even a Psychiatrist just someone with a degree to give pills. Also among reading WP people can have MORE than one disorder and I was shocked hearing the pill statement from him. If I was to get true help I'd want ideas on how to change my behavior without it being forced and to learn about my behavior instead of oh take a pill. Oh well. I only see him every 2-3 months anyway maybe someday I'll get "REAL" Help!! !! (I swear am I the only one that sees a problem with my behavior upsetting my Psychology teacher AND the topic of sexual harrassment being brought up at my first job with a coworker?) LOL!

My youngest brother got diagnosed with it back in 97 or 98. Since then, I've known about it but didn't think it was such a significant stumbling block for me. In the last year or so, it has become more and more of a stumbling block for me. Part of it may have been joining on here and reading the stories of some of the lives here as it brought back particularly painful memories that I'd rather forget. Part of it was because it finally gave an explanation for some of those painful memories and noticing that it was still affecting me day to day.

My mum first told me what it was when I was 9, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was 11 and she also told me I had it then.

I did some shrink time in 7th grade, then right after my divorce...and both were before '94, so that 'diagnosis' wasn't an option. I had to figure it out for myself.

When I was concerned that I had dyslexia my mum said I should look up autism, but I scoffed at her. 6 months later after a pretty bad relationship I looked up Asperger's Syndrome again after reading about someone talking about their life on Yahoo answers and not knowing what was wrong with him. It sounded like we were separated at birth. I had so much in common with him that I became obsessed with reading about AS.

I found AS out myself, thanks to my random readings through Internet.

I told my sister (RIP) about AS and what I read, and she said "That really fits you. I noticed you had something 'different' since we were small". She was always very supportive with me
