no way!! she's wooden, she and orlando bloom are girl and boy versions of each other, if they ever got it on in Pirates all you'd hear is 'clonk!', 'clonk!', 'clonk!', 'clonk!'. (bloom ruined Kingdom of heaven, apparently studio didn't want mr Depp, fools!)
Good shout on Natalie Portman, gone a little astray after star bores but...
also Christian Bale, Audrey Tautou, Emmanuelle Béart, Ian Mckellen as Magneto, Liev Schrieber (manchurian candidate), Brad Pitt (fight club), Edward Norton (Fight Club, American History X), Alan Rickman (Die Hard)
I'm torn as to Natalie Portman. I saw some of a movie where she played a girl who got smacked around who took up with a hit man, and she was great. In Star Wars, she tanked. The first one wasn't horrible (she wasn't horrible in it, comparatively speaking) but it's hard to tell if it's her or the script when you have a whiney girl saying, "But what about our love?" Between that and Darth Timberlake (that's from the Rifftrax on ep 3) what hope did she have? And why didn't Obi-Wan just wave his hand over her head and convince her she had the will to live? But, I digress.
I like Tobey Maguire.
Let's see, though, my favorite... James Stewart and Irene Dunne. I just like old movies, is all. I'm trying to think of any newer ones I admire... well, it's true what was said before, a lot of actors have pulled down a good performance from time to time. Bruce Willis was great in Unbreakable, also. Milla Jovovich in The 5th Element if only for her speaking the fake language as though it was real. Harold Lloyd... Everyone thinks of Chaplin as being the master of bittersweet comedies from the silent era. Maybe that's justly said, but you don't hear as much about the performances of Harold Lloyd in some of his, situations where he was laughing even though he was miserable, or had received a crushing piece of news, and you can see it all in his face. It's hard to choose my favorite of the three though, him, Chaplin and Keaton.
Some of my favorite acting these days is voice only, though. Lauren Bacall, Christian Bale, and Jean Simmons in Howl's Moving Castle are among my favorites. James Woods as Hades was another nice one.
Oh, I know a newer actor I like. It always takes me a while. Will Smith. Every movie of his I see just impresses me more (with him), even if the movie tanks.

There's the road, and the road less traveled, and then there's MY road.
Actors
1. Arnold Schwartzenegger: Something about the accent, his timing and the sorts of movies he's in. There's been some lesser quality Arnie films but he doesn't have an equivalent of Hollywood Homicide (Which wipes Harrison Ford off my list).
2. Leonardo DiCarprio: I've tried not to like him because he's too young etc.. but unfortunately he turns in such consistently good performances that I've got not choice.
3. Johnny Depp: He's been pretty consistently entertaining too.
Actresses
1. Milla Jojovich: If the name wasn't enough, she's very watchable - even if her movies aren't always the best. As to whether she's got acting abilities, compare the Fifth Element, The Messenger and Resident Evil. They're all action roles (which is a rare plus for females) but they're different.
2. Audrey Tataou: There's something unearthly about her which makes her a delight to watch.
3. Kathy Bates: From Misery to Titanic, she dominates every scene that she's in.
....and why didn't Obi-Wan just wave his hand over her head and convince her she had the will to live? But, I digress.
Good point, though I think that only works on the weak minded.
I usually try to explain away the probematic star wars relationships as;
1. They were from different cultures which you can't compare to ours.
2. Neither had been allowed to grow up properly. Imagine how a boy raised by monks would behave if he met a girl he had the hots for as a child. The same goes for the daughter of an "all work and no play" workaholic, overachiever family who never had time for proper adolescent socialisation.
3. I think they were both very good actors but forced to work to George Lucas's vision. He obviously had his reasons for the way their romance was conducted. Perhaps to get it down to the level of the under 12 y.o. children who were watching? Perhaps for running time reasons? Perhaps because he felt they needed to act "over-sheltered".
(and yes, I'm digressing too - sorry... it was just an interesting idea and I couldn't help it).

Ah, the weak-minded. I do recall hearing that phrase somewhere in regards to the matter. That resolves the question.
And I am totally open to blaming George Lucas for turning to deadwood most of the performances in the prequel films. He seemed to have an energy with the first three that showed within the film, and less of a penchant for visual exposition, yet somehow got the story told and told well in the older movies. With the newer, I was often lost. I almost wonder if the whole world that had developed in books since then overcomplicated the storytelling. In any case, I am not inclined to give him credit for having a good reason for some of the things he did. There's no excuse for the bug wrestling scene.
But I guess we'd better stop hijacking the thread...
