"Seldom are adults handed this diagnosis out of the blue."

This is precisely what transpired in my case. In my view, self-diagnosing is for those who are desperately clamouring for a label.

His humour drew from seeing what was absurd in the NT world of "normal" social interactions, then making that absurdity explicit. I can see that being a special talent in a near-autistic person. I am new to WP, as mother of a diagnosed 26-yr son, whom I always found just eccentric, like me, & now know that we are probably both ASD, we are both v different from my NT daughters.

This is an excellent article, and I agree with you... when somebody like Jerry Seinfeld makes a comment like he "may be on the spectrum," I look at him and think ... yeah, there are some characteristics in you that I recognize and see in my son and/or my father. These are characteristics that I LOVE. The way Seinfeld has of looking at ordinary life experiences and seeing them with a fresh perspective. The wondering why he does things in ways that may seem odd to others, but when explained, make total sense. Jerry Seinfeld and my loved-ones share a similar outlook, and I find them all appealing.

As a non-spectrum mother, I find that I am drawn to the people I know who are on the spectrum. I just find them more interesting, funnier than others, and easier for me to understand. There is no hidden agenda. I think that may be the reason why a lot of us like Jerry Seinfeld. If somebody feels like they can relate to the group that calls itself "autistic," I see no reason why they shouldn't be welcomed. Your article is excellent in it's appeal to get us to do exactly this -- welcome anyone who feels an affiliation with the autistic world.
