Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Can you tell the difference between teasing and an insult?

I got it wrong at least once, though it was a complaint rather than an insult. A few people at work were telling me that my lab coat looked scruffy, and as they were smiling about it I thought they were teasing, so I "hit back" in an equally teasy way. Soon afterwards, the boss told me the...

Oh, emotional control? About 9 out of 10. I hardly ever jump about in joy, burst into tears in sorrow or frustration, freeze in terror, or whatever. I feel those things strongly enough but it's hard to tell from the outside. Not surprising. I'm British.

There's probably something in the control theory, but I see it as more than that, at least in my case. Dad used to say that although it took me longer than most people to understand a thing, when I got there I understood it better than most people. And until I got there, I didn't understand it at al...

There's a similar phrase, "Don't get mad, get even," which I think is more benign. It's less warlike without becoming too goody-goody.

Just one more reminder that business doesn't equal morality. That's why I don't give much support to the free-market ideology, and prefer that the wings of big business are clipped now and then.

You know those ads that pop up at the bottom of the TV screen when you're trying to watch a show? They annoy me and Mrs. ToughDiamond, so I began looking for a solution. First attempt : Fixed a carefully-measured strip of cardboard to the bottom of the screen. Result : Not very good. The cardboard w...

Conciseness (-100. This is so much longer than I intended.) Better verbose than misleadingly simplistic, IMO. Good to see I'm not alone. Conciseness: Depends how much time I have. I was quite pleased with the conciseness of my post, given the huge range of matters the questions were looking into an...

I think your English was good enough to understand. ASD isn't easy to diagnose because it has a lot of traits, and because each trait presents itself to a different degree in different people. The cutoff point, the line they draw between ASD and not-ASD, is somewhat arbitrary and meaningless. So I w...

You said earlier that the man / bear thing was an opportunity for the internet to hurt men. I just want to make it clear that the public response to this meme hurts women too. I agree with everything Duck wrote about the topic causing unnecessary division. Yup. I also agree with Duck's last post. I...

Can't answer meaningfully without explanatory notes about nuances, so I've added those. Driving: Last time I looked, I was able to successfully reverse a tractor and trailer round a corner. It's a knack. I can drive a suitable vehicle (car or small tractor) quite well in the absence of other road us...

It can be a good source of ideas, but signing up and posting there might not end well, unless it's about technical matters in a technical thread.

I have learned that if someone does something they are likely to do it again in the future. The best predictor of future behaviour is usually past behaviour. I have tried "moving on" and forgiving the other person however they still continue their behavioural patterns. At best they may st...

I haven't got a Reddit account, but I've "lurked" there often enough, usually reading about technical things, which don't attract a lot of acrimony, except for angry outbursts at Microsoft etc., which is forgiveable. I've also seen a bit of stuff about politics and general matters, but I'v...

An Irish priest once told me to 'pray for the bastards'. This works even if you have no religion. Leave it to God, or karma, or the forces of nature, etc., and they will deal with it. I have no religion, and it doesn't work for me. Obviously cosmic intervention is out of the question in my view of ...

we need to put fewer expectations on victims and spend much more time raising awareness, educating teens, improving laws, and believing victims. I think most of the bastards I've met wouldn't be much improved by trying to raise their awareness. I don't think the meme would change them either. It's ...

^ It IS victim-blamey. It’s shifting the focus from the perpetrator to the victim. It happens too much, and it needs to change. It shouldn’t be hard to imagine how self-defense would be completely ineffective in many different scenarios. Yes, I think "victim-blam ey " is a more accurate d...
