I think "the warm sun was like the orange fluffy cat" is an awesome metaphor, myself! I agree! Some of the other ones were: The scarf was as red as _______________ (She put the sun) The hill was as slippery as _____________(she put an iceskate) I slid down the hill like a ____________(she put a wet...

I know you have been trying really hard for her classroom experience to be as similar to the others kids' as possible but I am still wondering if there is something else that could be done to relieve some of her stress so she has more energy and tolerance for other things. Does she get any breaks d...

For me, I find it hard to shift gears when I've made up a plan of what I'm going to do. So someone will say something and I can't process it because it goes against my plan. I've been working on recognizing this and overriding it, but it's not easy. I think this is right on target when it comes to ...

My daughter (9) is so easily frustrated that she won't even attempt many things. For too long, I have smoothed frustrating tasks for her-helping her achieve even simple things like getting dressed or brushing her teeth. But it seems we never make any progress in this! She is getting afraid to even a...

My daughter has daily stomach aches-sometimes to the point of doubling over in pain. We have sought out drs and specialists-all to no avail. We have gone GF. We have gone Lactose Free. Nothing helps. As a previous poster mentioned, I believe it is caused by anxiety as she is worst on school day morn...

I don't know how I cope...I too have massive anxiety/depression when my daughter has severe difficulties. I tend to escape by reading after she goes to bed. Getting lost in a good novel is my way of escaping. During the day when you are dealing with everything moment to moment it is quite difficult-...

Poor impulse control is part of AS. They can try to medicate it with ADHD meds but I believe our children are just delayed in mastering impulse control. They will learn it, it just takes much longer. Natural consequences are the best way to teach this, instead of him "getting in trouble" for destroy...

My daughter has these issues as well, although she is not hyperlexic. She has trouble visualizing a picture of what is happening with the story, therefore cannot keep track of who's who and who's doing what. I was told to have her read a paragraph or so aloud and then stop to talk about the paragrap...

My daughter also does this, and a few weekends ago had an extremely bad episode screaming in the back yard. I was afraid someone would call the police, but what can you do? My neighbors know about my daughter's diagnosis but that doesn't change the fact that when a child is screaming in panic that p...

My daughter has had what I have come to know as "disassociative" episodes. They started pretty young and most often are brought on post meltdown but they can also occur outside of a meltdown. She has them when she witnesses someone screaming in anger. I first noticed them as she would go into a spac...

Thanks everyone. I have a conference scheduled Wednesday with the principal and teacher to go over the issues. Hopefully they'll have some recommendations. We've already discussed some pre-teaching, don't know how that will work but I will see what they have to say.

What sort of speech problems is she having? Articulation or vocabulary or what? My daughter's articulation issues got better around age 8. She is still selectively mute at times even at age 9 1/2.

Have you considered getting into something that would be an outlet for his rage, such as martial arts? My brother has these issues as well and did well in martial arts. They teach self control and also use a lot of energy in the workouts.

My daughter also "escapes" with electronic products (ipad, video games). I try to utilize it as a reward, but in times of difficulty I allow her to escape quite a bit. I also give her the electronic time after she has completed required things such as homework, getting ready in the am. The use of th...

My daughter, up until this year made pretty good grades. All A's and B's. Her teachers prior to this year helped her out a lot. They modeled how to do the first problem or explained/interpreted what the question meant. Because of my daughter's pragmatic issues and inability to generalize, problem so...
