Well, I can appreciate what the article says...yet, I am not too concerned about the why but more of the how to. Most of our family is on the Autistism Spectrum and the newest member (now age 3.5) is refusing to toilet train. She has the verbal skills to indicate that she needs to go - and some days...

Does anyone have any links to empirically based studies (outside of the Irlen family) to support perceptual vision issues and treatment?

In addition to the great suggestions made, I would add music...I used classical music..nothing fancy but just something that can be soothing. Also, just plain boxes of different sizes...they can be used to crawl in, build with, put toys in, take toys out. My grandson also needed extra blankets to sl...

My grandson had this issue but only at school. He had flushable wipes at home. Also, he hadn't been 'told' that it was okay to have a bm at school and wasn't too sure what to do. Sooooooo, my son took 3 flushable wipes and put them in a baggie in the bookbag. This way, (now that he knows he is allow...

One issue to keep in mind is....what your son heard might be slightly different than what the teacher said...and what he told you might be slightly different than what he heard...sometimes things get lost in the communication process. It happens. And, I don't know if it's worth the time to find out ...

Thanks all for listening to my vent...it is frustrating sometimes as we make this journey. For the curious, K has been an independent soul since birth so it seems...walked early, extremely curious, picked locks quickly...speech was delayed. Extremely sensitive to sounds. Not a cuddly one at all. Att...

Gosh, it's been a while since I have visited. Mostly because life keeps moving on. My grandson who is now 7 just underwent some more evaluations which have clarified nothing, but may help him get an IEP. The only agreement that people (professionals, family, community members) can come to is that he...

A language disorder is some type of impairment in the ability to communicate. It could be enunciation (making words sound right), expressive (can't get the words right to express a thought), receptive (hears the words, but the brain misses something in the translation), social skills (not being able...

That's a mouthful isn't it? Sooo, my dear grandson who is a more than child has been in kindergarten this year. A lot of concerns expressed that he was adhd and needed meds from the school were expressed. Dad said 'no meds' not at this point at least. His dad insisted that at least another speech ev...

It doesn't seem your twins are developmentally behind at all. In fact, for full term babies...they can begin walking up to 17 months and still fall in the 'normal' range'. Yours actually started walking at '10' months if you adjust their developmental age. Twins often times develop twin language whi...

Well, the first week of kindergarten has come and gone for my grandson! I tell ya...it was a whirlwind. First day of school went great. Second day, he was held after class and the teacher (being 'nice') talked to his mom about his 'differences'. My son met with the teacher and speech therapist on th...

Social intelligence is an offshoot of Gardner's theory of mulitple intelligences. It's just a theory...not been proven and little in the way of substantial studies. Even the definition is up in the air. Therefore, as it has already been said...if you do find anything...be wary of what it supposedly ...

Sounds like you're a lil quirky to me. We all have such unique qualities. And, having a diagnosis isn't going to change who you are...because you are who you are. I like the idea that your supervisor is willing to play to your strengths..and if you recognize some areas that are difficult for you in ...

"I can understand your "separation of feline and human" logic. " I actually don't see it as such. I see it as each being (cat and human) has his/her own food spot such as 'this is where the cat eats, this is where you eat, this is where I eat. We all have our own space to eat'. Maybe even have some ...

I have learned in my old crone days...that people do the best they can do at any given point in time. In other words, receive the gift - say thank you (for the thought) and move on. And, if she mentions 'oh..you don't like it cuz it's from x company'...just say..'what's really important to me is you...

My grandson (5) emulates a cat - minus the litter box and cat food, because there are none in his house. His brother, 2, emulates a lion and growls when not happy. I used to be a beaver...building dams and gathering food...over and over and over again. The litter box must be moved. It is too much li...
