I tend to wear my clothes until they are completely worn out. I don't care if people think I'm scruffy, I'm always clean. They might have just said it as a precaution. Maybe the people that asked you to backup your emails don't even know why they asked it. It could just be something they learned to tell people when they have to move people around. I'd say if in doubt, get one of them to explain why ... it might be some...
