None of us, I presume, know the kid in question. I personally believe that autism is a catch-all diagnosis for what is really a number of similar, but distinct, conditions. Perhaps there is a small subset that can be "cured." I don't know that that isn't true. And even if such subset does ... |

How awful! How long does he need to stay on the prednisone? It is probably making any natural fear he may be experiencing worse. I know I felt really jittery when I had to take it. If you don't know it is a side-effect of the medicine, I imagine you could interpret the physiological experience as an... |

I wonder what would happen if you took the initiative. For example, the next time you are going to go visit him, why not just say, for example, "Dad, on Tuesday I think we should go to the XYZ. I was reading about it online and it looks like it would be a lot of fun. I checked into the ticket p... |

When my son was 10/5th grade, he became aware that he was doing things to make him a target, but he had no idea what those things might be. It all culminated when he reported that he was going to bring his stuffed animal with him to school. I basically begged him not to, but he would have none of it... |

Wait...you started out by saying he is a "17 yr old" and then you said he is "ten." Exactly how old is he? If you are going to go the route of taking away his internet, I think you are going to have to have the internet removed from your house as a whole. He will figure a way aro... |

I have is not been around much, so I don't know if you have already shared in what way your daughter is having a hard time, or even if you feel like talking about it. Your daughter is the same age as my son, and the one thing I have noticed with him is that although he is normally very even-keeled, ... |

Two thoughts...the first of which is not going to be popular, but...oh, well! Gaming has some pretty sophisticated socializing involved, depending upon what he's actually playing. My son plays games online with IRL friends and "friends" he has met online, although there is a rule in... |

To a child's perspective, they will just see the adult keeps on changing the rules. They won't really learn anything. Consistency, particularly in the formative years, is crucial. It is only when the rule "You don't kick other people" has been firmly established and internalized that you ... |

With my kids, I have found that the rules needed to be more concrete and more absolute as they were younger, and that they have learned more flexibility as they have gotten older. Really young kids do not have the experience nor the cognitive capacity to "play in the gray." They may not un... |

It's been a long time. Not for any particular reason. I had a very demanding job with high stress levels. 50+ hours per week, plus about 2 hours of commute a day. Got a new job, closer to home, more reasonable expectations. So, hopefully my life will go back to being a regular life instead of a cons... |

Anyone else's kid starting middle school this year? I don't know who is more nervous here, me or her. :? My daughter is 10, about to enter 6th grade (turns 11 early in school year). She has been fully mainstreamed without any supports since 4th grade. Previous to that, she was in a mainstream classr... |

That was a great film.
Interestingly, I did not find it strict at all. I do not believe my daughter needs such a structure and routine, but I can see where it would be beneficial for many.
Adamantium, I think it is really positive that your daughter brought it to you. You must be proud of her. |

Your daughter sounds a lot like my daughter at that age. Flash forward to 10 and she has seriously changed. In a positive way. She is still stubborn and is still a picky eater, but she mainstreamed in school (this year no supports...next year she will go to middle school, so we will likely add them ... |

I think lots of people want to be lots of things at the age of 16 that they never end up being. I'm not Catholic, so I don't really know what going to Catholic school has to do with it. Is she a practicing Catholic? If so, and she identifies with it, I would actually encourage her to explore her int... |
