Firstly, even though I'm not an expert with modern tech, I'm still reasonably computer literate. I bought a genuine copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit legitimately for my own personal home use, then upgraded my computer & went from a hard drive to an SSD a couple of years later. However the guy who installed the hardware for me had trouble getting Windows re-activated & had to do it by removing the WAT. Ever since then my PC sometimes displays the message: "Windows 7. Build 7601. This copy of Windows is not genuine", which I can get rid of temporarily by going into properties in My Computer. I do however see the "Ask for genuine Microsoft software" sticker when I'm there though.

Every time I try the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Validation tool it gets interrupted before it can finish. I'm with Talk Talk Broadband but not fibre-optic.

Please help.

Some cheaper versions of Windows 7 are bound by CPU ID when activated for the first time. If you have that version (which you seem to have) you are screwed and need to buy a new copy if you can find one.

I have the professional 32/64 bit version and can reinstall that indenfinitely. Its worth to buy this slightly more expensive version which is not limited to one specific hardware if you are upgrading over time.

This may or may not be useful to your case.

Quote:
You need to re-activate - Windows thinks that the licensing Store has been tampered with.

Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

Recreate the Licensing Store
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
net start sppsvc
slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

Ichinin, I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit but thanks anyway. RhodyStruggle, thanks, I'll try that next time I'm on my PC looking for things to do & have my product DVD handy. One thing, though, where do I find MGADiag? I'm guessing that's a program. The industry started to move too fast for me from Windows XP onwards, the only ones I knew more about were Windows 3.1 & DOS 6.2 then maybe 95 & 98SE.

MGADiag.exe (Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool)

You can download this directly from Microsoft here (1.9 MB): https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

This just creates a dump of information about why your specific computer is not validating, so that you can send it to tech support and they can diagnose your problem remotely. It might give you a specific error that you can Google though so it's worth a shot.

Thanks, I'll be listening to the radio again tomorrow night, (I listen every Friday & Saturday evening until between Midnight & 1), so if I have located my product DVD by then I'll give it a try.

If your copy of windows is genuine. Then I would just call Microsoft tech support and tell them what's going on and they should be able to help you.

LupaLuna, if there was a way to have a decent chat with MS Tech Support for free, I would. :) RhodyStruggle, I typed in the commands you posted & then my Win 7 Product Key, so far so good but it's still early days. Here's my new MGADiag report:

But you have told us your copy of Windows has been pirated. Windows Activation Technologies has been
removed
.

MGADiag is seeing your copy of Windows as activated, but the servers at redmond are flagging your copy
of Windows as a non-genuine activation.

You will not be able to gain genuine status until you repair WAT, or re-install Windows and in both cases you
will then need to activate by phone.

Well, no non-genuine message so far, the real test will come when I try to download any of the Genuine Advantage software. I have repaired and removed the WAT a few times in the past in my attempts to get rid of the message but I honestly can't remember what status it's in now.

OK thanks, the only thing is finding how to access it. :) However it's been a few hours now without receiving the non-genuine message. If I didn't want to find the time to play games on my PC, (Civ 5, maybe go back to Beyond Earth, hopefully Civ II, Alpha Centauri, Command & Conquer), & maybe also go back to using Adobe software, namely Dreamweaver & Photoshop, I would just move to Chrome OS. I wish Adobe would release software for creating abstract art though, in other words, doodling, that would be a lot of fun! :) I find Apple products too expensive btw even though I was using a Mac in school that had a rudimentary start menu in 1994, before Win 95 was released.

If Windows 10 gets good reviews I'm going to move to it. I might have to update though to continue to be able to do what I want on my PC.
