I saw the Simple Simon at the Glasgow Film Theatre last Friday to a full house. Simon has quite severe Asperger's at the beginining of the film which is shown in his restrictive interests and addiction to routines. As part of the plot development to enable him help his brother get a new girlfriend, he develops a degree of social skill and understanding that seem impossible considering the severity of his condition. Consequently, though it had some interesting eccentric aspie moments particularly relating to his outer space interests, it was an unconvincing portrayal of an aspie character. It tried hard to be a warm, feel-good comedy. I didn't care for it much, one way or the other, though many people seemed to like it.
