The Shawshank Redemption

Wouldn't be the same without Morgan Freeman.

Apocalypse Now should never be remade - probably because the haphazard film making that somehow worked in the end could never be duplicated.
And it would truly be a travesty if the original Star Wars trilogy was remade. Despite the fact that new special effects already make what was in the movies look dated, and that the dialogue could infinitely be improved (especially in A New Hope), I find it impossible to believe the old Lucas magic could be replicated.

The Wizard of oz there's still a lot of life left in the original and it wouldn't be the same without Judy garland.

I'm really disgusted in the American entertainment industry. All it does today is pointlessly remake movies and TV shows, make crappy uninteresting reality TV shows, and release almost every new film in 3D. There needs to be a law prohibiting remakes and movies and TV shows (American or foreign) in the USA. Anyone who violates this law should pay $50,000-$100,000.

Hollywood long ago ran out of ideas - franchise "reboots" are vogue right now - Superman, Spiderman, Total Recall, mining comic books for stories. Probably all classic films will be remade at one point or another. Many they should not bother with, though I've seen many remakes that were excellent movies in their own right (Father of The Bride comes to mind).

Good Will Hunting

It just seems like the idea of an autodidact is pretty timeless, and the issues about growing up that it explores are amazing. It would be so different if Matt Damon's character was using Khan Academy and taking open courses online from universities. I also think that Robin Williams gave his best performance in this film as well (though Dead Poet's Society is a close second).

I'm not even commenting on the quality of the movie, necessarily... The racial humor is relatively risque by today's standards and probably wouldn't have the same level of success because of new writers trying to be PC.

Twelve Monkeys by Terry Gilliam, the low budget worked to his advantage and no amount of CGI would improve the story.

And I agree wholeheartedly, the 1939 MGM all singing all dancing version of The Wizard of Oz.

Todd Browning's Freaks is so bizarre, with actual Circus freaks portraying the characters that modern techniques could improve on the acting, but that's not the point of the movie.
