I love NECROBUMPING. Why keep perfectly good information in the grave when I can enjoy it now? Would you burn the Library at Alexandria? Each person can choose what they want.

Very well said.

there are hundreds of good old threads that could provide entertainment anew if somebody would dig them up and air them out again.

Better to keep a subject in one thread, unless there is a really good reason why to separate it into a new thread.

Also makes searching easier with less search terms needed since automatic forum "related subjects" features does not always work that well.

it makes me wish I could hop into the WABAC machine and have a conversation with some of these long-departed members.

is it me and my browser or did WP get rid of the thing at the bottom with 4 other threads?

It depends on the context.

I tend to wish the OP was still around to respond. There have been a couple of occasions where the Original Poster actually responded to a five-year-old or older thread.

Kraftie - Unrelated...I am glad you are still actively posting. You bring continuity to this place. I used to be a bit more active (but no longer have the time). Nevertheless, it's good to see familiar faces.

100% agreed! :D

If I have an interest in two-part semiautomatic wind-up widgets, rather than starting a new thread, I might use the 'Search' function. It is very time consuming if my search returns 23 separate threads on widgets. Therefore I might resurrect a dormant thread on widgets (especially if they're of the semiautomatic wind-up variety), even if the last post was made in January of 1923.

1923 was a great vintage for wind-up widgets!

I wouldn't mind seeing necrobumping if folks KNEW that was what they were doing, and would even put in a disclaimer saying that "I know this is an old thread, but the subject is still relevant. So here it goes with my two cents worth on the subject..."

But participants in current threads see those "related subjects" come up on the bottom of the page, and click them without even checking the dates on the posts on the thread they are reviving. And then they go off the deep end ...and proceed to give advice to the original poster about his girl friend, or they get offended and ream out the original poster, or whatever, and don't realize that they are talking someone who hasn't posted on WP since 2011.

in the grand scheme of things, it causes no harm.

The only potential "harm" done is if a poster from 2018 expects an OP from 2008 to respond, and is disappointed by the nonresponse.

I remember someone once bumped a thread here and there was a comment posted by someone about women and it was a misogynist comment. Members responded to it and the thread turned heated and this was an old thread from a few years before and that person who posted the comment didn't even come here anymore and members were provoked by an old comment. The thread was removed as a result with no warning.
