I don't smoke. I tried it once out of curiosity as to what it's like but didn't like it.

There is no choice for me.
I started smoking around age 13 stopped for a year aged 23 then stupidly started again.
I stopped again and have been smoke free for about 5 years.

I went through a brief social smoking phase in college, usually at restaurants (back when indoor smoking was still allowed in my state.) I hardly ever inhaled though, I just puffed on the cigarette. I did kind of like the taste of some cigarettes, like menthols and clove cigarettes. I also like the smell of pipe smoke.

Still, I don't think I've touched a cigarette in the past ten years. I'm glad I didn't make it a habit.

I've smoked a couple of cheap cigars before, one was to celebrate my half brother's birth, the other was when my older stepbrother came down to visit and he shared the one he was given (this happened around the same time). I will honestly admit, I enjoyed it way more than I should have. I liked the flavor, and I found that the nicotine buzz made me feel really calm and serene. It took a lot of willpower to not allow it to turn into a habit, and just as well because I don't want to become completely addicted to something with such deleterious health effects.

Oddly enough, though I like the smell of cigars and don't mind their smoke, I absolutely abhor cigarette smoke. The smell it leaves behind isn't too bad, as it kind of gives me a warm nostalgic feeling that reminds me of visiting my aunt's house when I was a kid, but the smoke itself hurts my throat and stings my eyes.

I don't judge people who smoke. I can see how it can be an easy thing to get trapped into, and I am very very lucky I didn't get addicted. A lot of people say that it's stupid to start in the first place, and while it certainly isn't the "smartest" thing a person can do, people can be compelled to try all sorts of "stupid" things for various reasons regardless of how intelligent they are.

I've managed to avoid a lot of bad habits, and smoking it one of them.
