I was at the mall today with my DS and we had a lot of running around to do. I wasn't sure how long we would last because malls can be overwhelming for him but he was such a trooper. We were out and about for 4 hours and not a single meltdown. I was given so many opportunities today to remember why I wouldn't change a thing about him. I thought it would be a nice change to talk about what we love most about our aspie kids.

What I love most about my DS:

* Seeing how excited he gets when he finds something new with his current obsession. His whole little face lights up and he can't wait to share it with me.

* Although he seems socially immature to his classmates, no one makes his little sister laugh harder than him.

* His logic. Sometimes his black and white approach to life makes me put things back into perspective.

* He's hilarious! He truly makes me laugh so hard I cry.

So what do you love most about your aspie kids?

I love my daughter's almost complete and unfiltered honesty, even when it gets her into trouble for saying something like, "You're OVERWEIGHT!" to a woman she does not know. She has told a real lie to me only once in her life, after she clobbered a little boy with a big bubble wand and then said his sister did it. She got into a lot of trouble for that, partly for hitting and mostly for lying about it. I can't tolerate lies.

He is the kindest person I know.

He has this very dry wit, not everyone gets him, but those who do laugh till they cry.

He makes me think. Hard.

He is a hard worker.

He loves everyone. With precious little reciprocity I'm afraid.

He is honest, to a fault.

He apologizes straight up if he thinks he did something wrong.

He's the baby that made my endocrinologist say "you're what?" lol

What I love most about my AS son is his intelligence, his unique outlook and perspective on things. He is a great kid.

That's a tough one to follow....

hmm...I love his sense of humor...his wicked word play.

I love how straightforward he is. Never a doubt what is on his mind.

I love how he can love his pets unconditionally.

I'm not a parent but this thread has really touched me. It's nice there are those who are willing to see and appreciate the uniqueness of their AS child and not be bent on "curing" them or at least making them appear to be "normal."

What great parents all of you are.

Definitely his sense of humor...even when he's not trying to be funny he ends up saying something that always brings me to tears.
His logic...I always know where he stands on things...there are no gray areas which is great for me...
Lately, as a teen, his thoughtfulness asking how I am, I almost dropped to my knees...
I just love him to pieces.

I had to put that one in there. Because despite my being the queen of fertility, he was the baby they said would never happen. And by they I mean several specialists. Imagine their surprise when all was left to Mother Nature....

He has been the most confounding. The most amazing. The one who could surprise an old hand who thought she'd seen it all and heard it all.

What has surprised me the most is.. his empathy. My *most* empathetic child by far. And I have two girls!

What I love most are the words. An arguement about cleaning the kitchen, His reply to turning the dishwasher on....." Well, I'm the one who activated it" He never says anything simply. :D

My daughter is kind, loving, tolerant of the differences in others, giving, gentle, sensitive, honest, cheerful, far more optimistic than I am, smart. Follows her own fashion sense (she's 13 in 8th grade). Supportive of other kids in school. And is not afraid to folow her passions! Plus she's an Aspie like me!

Peace

I think my favorite thing about my son is that he's so sincerely who he is: He unabashedly loves what he loves and makes no excuses for it. And he has so much love to give. Ok, that's two things.

I love my son for:

Making me laugh
Making me think harder
That he trys SO HARD in everything he does
The pictures he draws for me to hang up at work
His hard hugs
Because he says Woot-Woo, and raahr to me when I get dressed up
His huge blue eyes
What a good brother and son he is
