Jesus, son of Judas of Gamala (Judas was the founder of the Zealot opposition to Roman rule, who died in a revolt against the Romans in 6 ad)

... so the scholar Eusebius suggested.

I'm inclined to agree.

Judas of Gamala was popularly known as Judas of Galilee

There were two factions in the Zealot movement founded by Judas:

a) Those who promoted the idea that they should "perfect themselves" in the eyes of God ... and "compromise" with the Romans ("Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's")

b) Those who brooked no opposition to their "insurgency" against the Romans and believed in assassination of anyone who opposed them ... be they Romans or Jews. Sort of like "terrorists" in a 1st century Palestinian sense.

Christianity is intimately involved with 1st century Palestinian politics ... with a heavy influence from contemporary Greek political concern with Roman domination. Sort of like a political co-operation between two formerly free peoples against Roman occupation.

The 'New Testament' has a lot of "politics" in it.

So who was "Al Qaeda" in 1st century Palestine?

The Sicarii Zealots?

Jesus was...

Quote:
Jesus was way cool
Everybody liked Jesus
Everybody wanted to hang out with him
Anything he wanted to do, he did
He turned water into wine
And if he wanted to
He could have turned wheat into marijuana
Or sugar into cocaine
Or vitamin pills into amphetamines

He walked on the water
And swam on the land
He would tell these stories
And people would listen
He was really cool

If you were blind or lame
You just went to Jesus
And he would put his hands on you
And you would be healed
That's so cool

He could've played guitar better than Hendrix
He could've told the future
He could've baked the most delicious cake in the world
He could've scored more goals than Wayne Gretzky
He could've danced better than Barishnikov
Jesus could have been funnier than any comedian you can think of
Jesus was way cool

He told people to eat his body and drink his blood
That's so cool
Jesus was so cool
But then some people got jealous of how cool he was
So they killed him
But then he rose from the dead
He rose from the dead, danced around
Then went up to heaven
I mean, that's so cool
Jesus was way cool

No wonder there are so many Christians

The Bible is all about politics. The Romans used crucifixion for political dissidents.

Then why would he be called "Son of Mary" when a Jewish man is referred to by his father's name except in cases of prayers for sickness, if the mother converted while pregnant, or if the father is not known? Jesus isn't even called "Son of Joseph" in the Bible, rather just "Son of Mary."

Cause he was a bastard child conceived out of wedlock after Mary was raped by a Roman Soldier?

That ought to provoke some postings!

Due to my religion or lack thereof, I have no strong opinions about Jesus. I see him as a philosopher, whose teachings became popular enough to turn into an organized religion. As for the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection, they were added on to Jesus's true life story as his treachings became more and more like the Christianity we have today.
