Ti thelete, kirie?

As son of two Classicists NEARLY turned Classicist who has been stin Elladha and to this day works with the Greek NT, I might be in a position to help.

Depends in part what you mean by Hellenicist - less common than Hellenist.

If you want a scholar competent to speak about Greek matters, I amay do in a pinch.

If you are referring to something more like THIS: http://www.talmidi.co.il/htm/articles/articles67.htm good luck finding someone competent to speak.

Hellenecist?

I am part Greek, and Greek thought played a role in my up-bringing.

I'm vaguely interested in Hellenistic philosophy. Mainly Hellenistic Astrology.

Do you mean, do I worship Zeus?

Moog has it :)

Yep, in 1991 after taking Classics for A Level I became a worshipper of Gaia (and then the Moirai and finally Athena). I never really felt much kinship with the male gods except for Hermes and Hephaestus, so you could call me an incredibly picky Hellenicist ;).

Unfortunately, it's not as if anyone in South East UK is taking up the torch with me! :( I normally have to say I'm a Pagan, just to be marginally understood! :lol:

So, I was just wondering, since this is an international site, whether there is anyone else like me in the world. It'd be nice to be able to say "Hi" :).

Oh, link to explanations:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellenic_P ... ructionism

Naturally, I don't seem to have bookmarked the really good ones I found a couple of months ago. Thanks past-me :evil: .

So, yes, Hellenic worship (I can't be bothered to write out the entire name!), with a bit of admiration for Socrates, Aristotle, Epicurus and the Sophists on the side :D . Anyone else?

You are several years too late. In my later teens, before I made the move from probably Classics to probably Linguistics, I fantasized gathering a like-minded group [yes, a little naive - me, gather a group? And find people what thinks like me? It is to laugh].

The idea wass to go off and find a spot where we could establish a colony leading a reconstructed Classical Eastern Mediterranean lifestyle, speaking Latin or Attic - I had not made up my mind.

Ah, well, I was young and even more naive than I am now.,

:lol: I think we all go through that phase in some form or other!

Personally, I don't tend to talk about my faith - for a start, who on earth would I talk to about it?! But it's interesting to see how vocal Christians are on these forums, so I was curious to see who else was out there. I mean, not everyone is Christian, right? :lol:

Actually, come to think about it, what on earth do main religions find to talk about so much?! I mean - Gaia... so, she's pretty cool, right? Created everything and all. Yay!. Yep, that's about it ;).

Is it hard to practice Ancient Greek religion in this climate? I remember reading Homer on a beach in the Mediterranean once, and it brought it all home to me how much Ancient Greek paganism was tied to the landscape and the climate. That's the reason why most pagans who aren't Wiccans in this country are Celtic Reconstructionists - it suits the miserable climate :lol:

I'm not a pagan, but my partner is a technopagan and he likes Athena.

As a Stoic deist I have no problem referring to the logos as Zeus, but I doubt he cares about that either.

Quote:
Most glorious of the immortals, invoked by many names, ever all-powerful,
Zeus, the First Cause of Nature, who rules all things with Law,
Hail! It is right for mortals to call upon you,
since from you we have our being, we whose lot it is to be God's image,
we alone of all mortal creatures that live and move upon the earth.
Accordingly, I will praise you with my hymn and ever sing of your might.
The whole universe, spinning around the earth,
goes wherever you lead it and is willingly guided by you.
So great is the servant which you hold in your invincible hands,
your eternal, two-edged, lightning-forked thunderbolt.
By its strokes all the works of nature came to be established,
and with it you guide the universal Word of Reason which moves through all creation,
mingling with the great sun and the small stars.
O God, without you nothing comes to be on earth,
neither in the region of the heavenly poles, nor in the sea,
except what evil men do in their folly.
But you know how to make extraordinary things suitable,
and how to bring order forth from chaos; and even that which is unlovely is lovely to you.
For thus you have joined all things, the good with the bad, into one,
so that the eternal Word of all came to be one.
This Word, however, evil mortals flee, poor wretches;
though they are desirous of good things for their possession,
they neither see nor listen to God's universal Law;
and yet, if they obey it intelligently, they would have the good life.
But they are senselessly driven to one evil after another:
some are eager for fame, no matter how godlessly it is acquired;
others are set on making money without any orderly principles in their lives;
and others are bent on ease and on the pleasures and delights of the body.
They do these foolish things, time and again,
and are swept along, eagerly defeating all they really wish for.
O Zeus, giver of all, shrouded in dark clouds and holding the vivid bright lightning,
rescue men from painful ignorance.
Scatter that ignorance far from their hearts.
and deign to rule all things in justice.
so that, honored in this way, we may render honor to you in return,
and sing your deeds unceasingly, as befits mortals;
for there is no greater glory for men
or for gods than to justly praise the universal Word of Reason.

~Cleanthes
