You shouldn't be allowed to be the President if you're a manbaby that picks fights.

...that moral benevolence and restraint are essential in a free society.

That's not just unpopular, that's downright despised.

I think that depends a lot on what kind of “restraint” you’re talking about.

Benevolence isn't necessarily a moral realm. Most definitions of benevolence make it synonymous with "charitableness, kindness, goodwill". Not necessarily "rightness", just "kindness".

What should be restrained, other than the obvious ones? Impulsivity is bad for a society, but what kind of restraint are we talking?

On the topic of morality, I am a proponent of absolute morality. Don't rape anyone, ever, under any circumstances. Etc. You get better practical results from such a system I think. It's an easier instruction for people in a society to follow than "weigh for yourself".

Well, I guess it depends on your moral frame. As a student of Stoicism, I'd say an unkind, uncharitable person is inherently immoral.

What I'm talking about is what the Romans called Civitas and what the founders called republican virtue. Here's my take on it (note the Edmund Burke quote):
viewtopic.php?f=20&t=323660&start=60

What it comes down to is that being the citizen of a republic doesn't just bestow rights. It also comes with duties. We cannot always pursue self interest. We must also serve the common good.

Every time citizens of a republic forget this, their republics fail.

Here's a (in my opinion) good take on the current state of republican virtue in America.

Now, how do you go about enforcing that? With some kind of weapon, perchance?

As grateful as I am to be living a relatively safe, comfortable life in a well developed country, I honestly things can be kind of boring here. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to live somewhere more dangerous and exciting. Of course, knowing myself and my lack of street smarts, it's probably a good thing I live where I am. :P

Support for third-party political candidates will never gain traction in the US.

Regardless if Trump or Hillary wins in November, the US will be turned into the next Russia.

DDT needs to be brought back and used to eliminate vector-borne diseases, it is harmless to people and the environment. Rachael Carson was a complete hack and 'Silent Spring' was based on junk science, she is responsible for the deaths of tens of millions and counting.
