Did the idea of dragons originate with ancient people discovering dinosaur remains?

Probably.

Other prehistoric remains contributed as well.

Unknown. Dragons can be viewed as super predator chimeras though. The wings of a raptor, the hide of a reptile (or specifically a serpent), the claws and jaws of a canid or felid or the talons of a raptor. They could have just as easily been created from the imagination of early humans. Modern dragon depictions I think draw on the appearance of dinosaurs, but many medieval and earlier depictions look varied and less so.

Giant monitor lizards. Their yellow flickering tongue looks like fire.

Your basic dragon is a "serpent with legs".

The English word "dragon" comes from the Greek word "draco" which means "serpent/snake".

Snakes are feared world wide because some species of snake have venom.

So fearing the bite of a poisonous snake can progress to going beyond demonizing its bite to demonizing its very breath. Hense the myth of the "fire breathing dragon".

there's theories on griffins having their origin in protoceratops sceletons- on medieaval maps, they are drawn in, supposed to live near the altai mountain range. where there happen to be lots of protoceratops sceletons.

you know, bird-like- beak, some strange flat bones behind the head, four legs and a tail - half eagle, half- lion. the association is not that unlikely.

vampires were probably rabid, so were werewofls, (plus, hirsutism, of course).... and so on.
devilish possession is epilepsy, and there's reason to believe that the flood-stories which exist all over the world and are really, really old, might go back to the last ice-age, 8000 years BCE, and the subsequent rise of sea levels.

so, yes, dragons are pribably dinosaurs, but mythologically, they are snakes+fire. what could be worse?
