pacific inn shelters called me today, that is where he was staying in santa cruz until the end, at mid-day they discovered his corpse, after he failed to come out of his room at his normal time in the morning, he apparently passed in his sleep which is a load off my mind. that is the best way to go. he left behind a box of comic books, which i suggested to the manager [everybody in his family line is gone, he was the last to go] that they be distributed to the other shelter residents. the manager said he was an "entertaining" fellow.

he also, most unlikely, was the owner of a few shares in some oil company, he inherited that from his dad, but too little to help him.

"You are in heaven my friend, you will be
Miss down here on earth. Heaven is lucky
To have you. You are with the angels now,
Go fly my friend above the big blue sky,
Where angels are beautiful & kind.
I will miss you, my friend of mine
."
this is a keeper, Kitty

i'm gonna see what the dept. of vital records, santa cruz, does with his remains. no living family, unfortunately, means they often go to a potter's field.

If he's cremated, and there are no other relatives - maybe the ashes could be sent to you so they can be scattered in a beautiful place of your choosing?

he has two cousins that hated him, they [according to Walter] mishandled his younger brother's remains, he said they did not place his brother in the family plot, his brother's remains are in an unknown location according to walter. i don't want this to happen to walter. he wanted to be placed in the family plot or at least have his ashes scattered around NY but i can't travel that far. i will call vital records on monday and hope for the best.

Do you know where exactly the family plot is?

what he said to me via email, was-

"I can be i interred in a fourth space in the Episcopal Church in Mount Kisco, New York's graveyard, where my mother / father/brother are already - Or, cremate me and dump my ashes- on the campus in University of California Santa Cruz to symbolize all the uni I never went to? At the beach there? (This assumes I'm here in SC when I die.) The beach/sea at Santa Cruz? The b/s at Jones Beach, New York City? That might be best, but perhaps might not be doable, as with all others here.. Give my body to Dominican Hospital, Santa Cruz or some other suitable medical? Just leave it one to Potter's Field? You can decide. Also, I guess , call the Hot Team medical people in San Francisco and the Homeless Medical Services Center (Or whatever it is called.) i. SC to say that I've popled my clogs . This is not day i g " I'm going to die now ", remember. But if ..........."

this was before he later found out when he visited, that his brother's remains are in fact not in the cemetery like they ought to have been.

Please let me know how I can help, Blabbs. These decisions are a lot for you to handle on your own, especially when you're grieving the loss of a friend - and you have limited mobility during Covid.

I worry about your emotional wellbeing and would like to support you through this in any way I can.

Message me if you need anything. We're all here for you.

@kitty, Your poem was beautiful. I'm sure Walter would have loved it.

This is a hard one.

You cannot travel to Santa Cruz—so that’s out.

And you probably can’t afford a plot for him—unless, somehow, Walter left some money for you.

Maybe the best thing is either cremate and have the ashes sent to you, or have him buried in some place where people who claim remains can be buried—but who can’t afford a plot.

It’s a hard one. I wish I had better advice.

I know it would be nice if the ashes were sent to me. And I would spread the ashes around Jones Beach (a 30-minute drive from where I live). To be honest, though, my wife would find this too morbid. If I lived alone, I would accept the ashes if asked.
