Now this is what I like to see!
Nothing makes me happier than a good old populist uprising!

Interesting development.

There was a mild revolt in Iran about ten years ago in response to a supposedly stolen election(stolen by the mullahs). But the revolt spent itself.

Then a couple years later the whole Arab world west of Iran got swept up in the Arab Spring.

And now Iranians seem to rising up again for democracy.

There maybe truth to the suspicion that the Saudies are indeed "backing" these demonstrations. But even if that is true the Saudies are only exploiting discontent that is already real among a big chunk of the Iranian population. The Saudies themselves are theocratic kingdom that doesn't even pretend to be democratic, but they might well be helping stoke the flames of discontent in Iran (a nation that atleast does have elections and does have the machinery of democracy in the form of parliament and an elected executive head of state- the problem is that both the executive and the legislative branches of Iranian govt are overridden by the mullahs). And doing so to sabotage their regional rival power.

So...

Cant help wondering if this wont turn out like the Battle of Yorktown in the American Revolution.

We Americans were colonies of the Brits. We rose up in a revolution against the crown (but also against the British Parlaiment- which did more to piss us off than did the British king). But the Brits were kicking our ass in the subsquent war. So we got help from European powers - and the biggest help came from the King of France. Money, weapons, and guys with military expertise to advise us like Lafayette. And in the last climactic battle of Yorktown even the French navy itself intervened to outflank the British navy and to help the Americans win in the land battle.

France's motivation? It certainly wasn't love of freedom or democracy. France was an absolute monarchy (like the Saudies are today). They were motivated out of hatred of, and envy of,and rivalry with, Great Britain (which only a few years before our revolution had kicked France's ass in the Seven Years War).

So our democracy loving forefathers were helped in their rebellion against the only slightly less democratic rule by Britain by the totally anti democratic absolute ruler of France. The irony doesn't stop there.

The success of our revolution inspired the people of France to rise up against that very same king - and to guillotine him in the subsequent French Revolution.

So... wouldn't it be cool if the Saudies ARE behind this, but ...it gets out of hand, and the people of Iran actually overthrow the Mullah class, and actually get real democracy...and then this inspires the folks in Saudi Arabia to...rise up against their own rulers? Wouldn't it be cool if this meddling by the Saudie monarchy results in the Saudi Monarchs themselves getting.. French style extreme hair cuts at the neck! Lol!
