I never knew other animals purred, the Lynx was beautiful, he seemed to love being stroked and fussed over.

I purr sometimes when my girlfriend is petting/rubbing/massaging my back or head.

Love that lynx! He was basically being like my younger cat when I pet him. The cheetahs were cute, too.

The Lynx is my absolutely favorite wild cat! I think I love it so much because it reminds me of Samantha and Prince, two Siamese of the "Lynx point" variety.

I think some pigeons approach purring, though it's not the same mechanism, and is probably just low cooing.

Off-topic, but are you aware of chuffing, also called prusten? Small and big cats do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8J9C11iZMI

So whenever I see a video of big cats purring, I like to say they're not purring, they're growling friendly-like.

I think that is pretty accurate actually.

Also tigers do something called chuffing, its sort of a friendly greeting:

lol I kind of wonder how this would work if you encountered a tiger in the wild... 8O

also cougars-

Yes the cat of many names, I tend to call them Mountain Lions though I know that is not very accurate, they aren't really lions at all. I once saw two of them in the mountains when I was riding somewhere with my mom driving they were rather close to where we lived. It was a large mom cat with her almost full grown cub, they were really beautiful.

Also, my brother has told me that when we lived up in the mountains, one time he went out to the back yard and there was one rolling around in a catnip plant we had growing. So I guess they like catnip just like most domestic cats, I just wish I could have seen that.

Lol also a cougar can't bite your head off...however a Jaguar may be able to, it could still kill a person but Jaguars have more head crushing power.

that reminds me of the low-pitched gruntling noises horses make, but they make those when something bothers them.

I read one time that cats don't always purr because they're happy. They might purr when they're frightened or in a lot of pain. Maybe it's something they automatically do to help calm themselves, kind of like when some person laugh when they are nervous or embarrassed.

There are different kinds of purring: solicitous, for wanting food or attention; contended; healing. If a cat is injured, purring supposedly increases rate of healing. I think it's also a bonding thing with kittens.
