Such an insect would indeed be rare in Canada this late in the year (as where I live as well).
FWIW, I was taking a cue from your "ladybug" story when I mentioned the gender of the UK singing group "Ladybirds" as a "blatant truth".
I also believe a strictly female species of Coleoptera would be scientifically impossible.
Another blatent truth...Ladybugs are NOT Hemiptera (which is supposed to mean bugs).
