So, as all discussions on the internet are supposed to lead to the mention of Nazis, this one starts with it....

I think it's stupid. Bring up Hitler or the Nazis in a topic, you lose the arguement.

It really amuses me that Godwin's Law was coined in 1990; you'd think the massive shift in internet demographics to include the mainstream over the last decade or so would change the face of internet discussions, but it turns out that all people are stupid in the same exact ways

I think that law has kind of been negated by the fact the people in power actually are major league fascists now. In the 90s it was still very ambiguous and anyone would be right to invoke Godwin when leaders are comopared to Nazis but now the ruling classes know they can be as Nazi-esque as they want and very few people will care so they do.

this comes up all the time. Godwin's law works sort of like what Lyndon Johnson did back in the 40s.

he asked his campaign manager to let slip that his opponent had sex with barnyard animals.

Horrified, his manager said "We can't do that! What would they say?"

Johnson "I just want to hear the sumbitch deny it!"...

The accusation is everything, the point is nothing.

Hitler was a vegetarian, therefore vegetarianism is obviously immoral.

I've found it prettymuch true, though...eventually any conversation, held long enough, will lead to either Hitler/Nazis or penis jokes. Or both
