I love, love, love the smell of lilacs and no one can bottle that smell. I lived in Illinois most of my childhood.....lots of lilacs. I have lived in Southern California for the past 11 years...no lilacs :(. We are moving to France in August and my husband has always promised me if we move there that he would plant me some lilac bushes...so my question is. When is the best time to plant and should I start with a seedling? and any other advice anyone might have.

I live in France. Just buy a plant from one of the garden centres or plant nurseries here, they aren't very expensive and grow fairly quickly. Plant it any time of the year you like, they are strong plants, no need to molly-coddle them.

I love them and have 2 bushes in my yard, but when my Gf brings them into the house I sneeze real bad, it may be a bad year for them in my city because of the cold weather

If you are prepared to wait, they sucker quite well, so you can transplant these rooted suckers elsewhere to save a little money. I'm always propagating shrubs and other plants to help fill the huge garden here.

Yeah, I was thinking I might have to wait to get flowers but I was wondering if I could by some larger bushes. We will probably stay in the same place (going to rent for awhile) for several years.
