medical sites would give be 1,000,000 options so I just thought what the hell I'd ask here. How should I deal with constipation? I go to the bathroom every 3 days just about and family are like OMG! you should go more than that! If I drink TONS of water it's looser otherwise it's like "a baked potatoe size and stops up the toilet EVERY TIME! I take psyllium husk which gives fiber. I've upped them to 3 morning 3 night yet the last 2 bathrooms have been "baked potatoe size" I'm starting to eat slower at times which mom read online helps but I don't want this to become a major helath issue.

A few years back my Urologist checked me and said OMG! it's back up to your ribs!! ! Yet I was feeling fine going about every 3 days. (Odd!) My physcian mention stool softners but I don't want it too lose to where you have to RUN to the bathroom. Any tips? Perhaps the 3 day/night and eating slower will take some time to kick in about another week or two not sure. Dad said what I'm going is probably food from 3 weeks ago which I wouldn't doubt but I'm no medical experet so I wouldn't know.

Thanks. WP. Sorry for the indepth medical ICK! but just thought I'd ask fellow WPers for advice on this thanks! :-)

Consult a licensed and degreed physician, and not a group of random strangers on a social website.

Constipation can lead to more complex problems like Diverticulitis.. I think loose is better than hard...

Do you suffer from IBS?

I concur, this could be serious and will ultimately become serious and you have provided so little relevant information anyway.

I agree that you need to consult a physician as this is not normal for anyone, and is beyond the scope of home-remedies. You might need to see a specialist Gastroenterologist.

However, I can tell you that constipation can become chronic to the point that serious complications can happen, such as the bowel/rectum becoming overly distended from the constantly large blockages and no longer being able to ever empty itself completely, causing old feces to basically ROT inside of you!

That's extremely unhealthy. Are you eating enough ? Also-- drink caffeine. Maybe coffee will help speed up the process.

^ that.

For digestive and gastro issues I can only say what my grandma nagged into my skull (and works btw): Oatmeal. The real stuff..the kind you take the flakes and cook them in very hot milk or liquid of your choice.

1 bowl of oatmeal a day not only cleans up your innards..it also provides tons of fiber and it lowers cholesterol and triglycerides. I have hypertriglyceridimia (very high levels of them)..the normal levels are 150 I had it at over 1000. Medication brings it down to 260'ish...and 2 months of eating the oatmeal once a day (not a bowl but rather a cup of it... made with hot orange juice rather than milk..mmmm!) lowers it to 180.

But if you're only unloading matter once every 3 days there's certainly something not right. It wont hurt you to eat oatmeal but do visit a doctor asap.

What do you eat? You need a mixture of soluble (found in all fruit and veg) and insoluble fibre (wholemeal grains, pulses, brown rice, oats, etc) in your diet.

Avoid stool softeners and laxatives unless you are willing to become dependent upon them. But, I doubt they would really do much anyway.

I think the issue here is stress, I have problems similar to yours, and there have been times I have gone only once a week.

Check the possible side effects of any medications you might be taking. I have had to stop taking some of mine as well as changing my diet a bit.

Those who prescribe their own treatments have fools for patients.

Maybe you have never had to deal with a bad doctor?

If you're already taking fiber and drinking lots of water, I'd agree that it's time to see a doctor specifically about it. It could be something like thyroid disease, etc., which you'd want to have treated if so.

My thoughts exactly. Doctors don't know everything and some have just scraped through their exams. I've recently cured myself of a severe medical complaint that was restricting my life quite considerably (don't want to go into detail, it's sufficient to say it's gynae). The doctor I saw could only offer me a procedure that would leave me infertile. So, I did a lot of reading. I found a herb that has been used for centuries and is considered safe, definitely much safer than the prescription drugs I was given that didn't even work. My doctor hadn't even heard of them.

Only once. Then I switched doctors. Duh.
