I go barefoot whenever I'm at home, ever since I lived in Taiwan for 4 years back in the 70s (heavy Japanese influence there from before WWII). It keeps the house much cleaner and just feels good. If it's too cold in the winter, I wear socks or something. I just wish I could get other people to take off their shoes in my house, but they're too culture bound, so I've given up.
My daughter, who was under my influence and also spent her formative years in Hawaii and Okinawa, goes barefoot more than I do, even outside. I can do that on sand, but otherwise, either it hurts too much (gravel and sharp tree seeds, etc.) or I think about all the nasty organisms that are in the soil. I edit microbiology books and articles, and there's a lot of stuff out there waiting for a way into your body. Ugh. I also don't like to have dirty feet for some reason--muddy or dusty, I mean. I do wear sandals rather than shoes, though, as long as it's warm enough.
