The Poinsettia plant, the famous red leaved Christmas plant, is not poisonous. In the 1940's a Doctor erroneously attributed a patient's illness to ingestion of the plant, and the news spread quickly. Some time later, tests were done on the plant and it was found to be completely harmless, but rumors still persist that it is not, all based on one doctor's report.
The Poinsettia was named for Joel Roberts Poinsett of South Carolina. he was the first US ambassitor to Mexico and an amiture botinst. Poinsett St, in Greenville, is named after him.
He was also a supporter of nullification, as introduced by John C. Calhoun. it is on the campus of Clemson university in Clemson SC that the Calhoun home is preserved.
