It's more the attitude.
The word "ret*d" has no inherent significance or morality.
Words are just a collection of letters
Actually, maybe.... If the word "ret*d" (and variants of) get banned on Wrong Planet, maybe the words "smart" and "stupid" should be banned too.......
Because

If something or someone is "smart", then it follows that something or someone must be "stupid"
Judging someone's IQ score - inherently condescending. Even if the judgment is "smart"
Seriously I feel ashamed when someone has the nerve to call me "ret*d", "stupid", or "smart"
They act like they expect you to believe everything and anything they say
