okay I'm not exactly sure where this post belongs, but this is something I've wondered if other people have done or do at times. I remember when I was little, I used to have trouble sleeping (I still do, but anyway...). I would amuse myself for hours staring at the ceiling and creating patterns. They weren't patterns in the ceiling, but patterns in thin air, made from my imagination, that I guess my thoughts were so strong that I was able to see them. I would play with them and move them around with my mind. One time they would be unicorns, another floating numbers, or just pretty translucent stars everywhere. I also somehow imagined Harry Potter in the hallway and really thought he was there (this was in like 2nd grade). Sometimes I also get songs stuck in my head and they are playing so loudly and so beautifully that I almost think they are playing very softly on a radio and it's like they are really there. I don't know if this makes any sense and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong category.

well, except for harry potter, yeah, i've done that before.

and i don't know if you do this often, (I've heard that poor short term-memory correlates to Aspergers), but i tend to absentmindedly set things down or put them places and can't find them later because i can't remember for the life of me doing so or where i put them and it frustrates me to no end.

i also can't copy down more than a short line of text before i have to look back at the original again because i can't remember exactly how it went.

although i've also heard that aspergers also correlates with really good long-term memory. which makes senses because i'm good with memorization, can remember certain things with picture perfect clarity, often recall randomly things about people that they told me offhandedly and don't recall telling me, and have vivid (although few) memories of people and places, events from as far back as when i was 2-3. for example i distinctly remember exactly what type of kiddie wading pool was in the backyard and that for whatever reason i was terrified of the man who lived next-door xD

I do that alot. I have to put things down in the exact same spot every time or I'll forget where they are. Even if I just go to the bathroom or go grab something out of my room and I don't set my house key or whatever on the candlestick on the top of my desk, I can spend 10 minutes or an hour or whatever looking for it. And alot of times I'll go looking for something only to find that it was right there in front of me all along (I was looking right at the mustard in the fridge the other day and I still couldn't find it. lol). I also do remember random, detailed stuff from when I was small. I remember the bug collection I had when I was 5 and when I was 3 or 4, I remember waking up besides my mom on the left side of the mattress that was on the floor. There was a smooshed green caterpillar looking thing inside once of my sleeves and for some reason my head was itchy. (???)

Makes complete sense. "Almost" is definitely the key word in this sentence, though. I know that I'm not actually hearing the music physically. It's very loud in my brain, though. Someone very aptly called this "the CD player in my head." It's apparently quite common for musicians on and off the spectrum.

I do this all the time, and it drives me up a tree! Having a home for common household objects helps alleviate this problem. The problem is that not everything has a home.

I remember complex sequences of musical notes, and I can remember them for pretty much forever. When the notes are grouped together, we call them tunes. Once someone starts a tune, I can remember it note for note. It's the remembering how the tune starts or recalling the tune itself... that's much more difficult.

yeah, like when i get song stuck in my head i'll start whistling it sometimes.

as for losing things, my dad has me run errands with the car and drive my siblings where they need to go since he and his GF work and i've managed to misplace the keys a fair number of times  . it's also how i lost my 30gb zune. papers, various other things. and i just can't understand why my mind can't seem to register what i'm doing when i leave them places. these episodes result in a mad search of the house for hours sometimes and at the end i just want to break something xD. also makes me bad with names and faces, dates, times. i've missed more than a few appts =/.

i used to memorize notes too. i was taking guitar class in high school and i was able to memorize the note sequences before most of the other people. look for patterns to make it easier, etc.
in fact i'm pretty sure that's how i learned to read. i didn't sound out words so much, i memorized entire words and read them that way picking up what different sounds letters made along the way. so i've always been able to read really fast skimming over entire words rather than the slower mental breakdown of each part. i can read 4 words per second, 240 per minute. i finished off a 1400 page harry potter book in under 12 hours. coincidentally i was always the good speller, since i read so much and was exposed to alot of vocabulary and examples of sentence structure and grammar i've always been really good with that too.

etc.

I do that when I wait in the unemployment line. It's so boring there, so I make the furniture and ceiling come to life.
I get that thing with songs too.

When I lived with my grandma when I was 4, in my bedroom the wallpaper had little squares all over it. I used to lay in bed and mentally connect different squares to eachother to make different pictures, usually of animals. I do a similar thing now but instead with the chips and indentations on the tiles on the bathroom floor.
Wow this is strange.

I'm kind of glad that I'm not the only one who ha expeirenced this throughout childhood. To be honest, it's not been as intense as it was when I was a child, but, yeah- that happens to me.

It's not as intense with me as it used to be either. I actually kind of miss it. I was talking to my dad about it before (one of the very few people I know that I can talk to about that kind of stuff and not get told I'm crazy) and he said that he believes that we are the smartest when we are newborns and as we grow up, society makes us dumber and that's why it's harder to do stuff like that that. He told me that he used to be able to have flying dreams and he can't anymore and I remember in early middle school and late elementary (4th-6th grade) I was able to have lucid dreams fairly regularly and I have to really try to have them now.
