This is the title of a beautiful gripping book by Karl Greenberg, brother of the severely autistic Noah, about whom altready four books have been written, three by the father and one by the mother. It's not properly a book about Noah. Who knows how life is experienced by a non verbal autistic? But it is a very good description of the impact of autism on a family and particularly on a brother a few years older.

I couldn't get past the pity/tragedy-imagery-induced vomiting, personally.

The imagery made you vomit?
Or the imagery was about vomiting??

Too many times I read about parent who crucify themselves to "help" their Autistic son.
This is the height of egotism, "Look at me ! ! Look at what I have sacrificed for my son!! Look at me ! !! I'm up here on this cross ! !"

It's a basic human need to get some attention, especially needing at least some recognition for something really hard.

This. Figuratively, not literally (as in "I found it disgusting").
