Who can say you are an Aspie?

I was just wondering when you can consider yourself diagnosed. I see a therapist, a LMSW whatever that is and a psychiatrist. The therapist thinks I'm an Aspie, though in me he says my ADD is worse. Anyway, he's going to talk to the psychiatrist about this possible diagnosis change, but if the psychiatrist disagrees, what then?

The night that I was in emergency, back in October, a sweet natured nurse felt out the features of my face, and she told me, "I can tell, that by your profile, that you were diagnosed with both HFA, and AS." I felt loved, after that.

Oh, nobody answered my question, how much should I trust a therapist with this?

well they might be right cos they are meant to be professional's so just see what happens if your not happy with the outcome then tell them x

Want my advice? Take the diagnosis. Aspie doesn't come with meds.

If they have enough background or education to know what they're talking about, I'd consider it legit.

I've always been a little 'off', but my doctors could never get it right until they came up with the AS diagnosis in '99. I went through more useless meds then I can count. for years.

I would trust a therapist's opinion, and it may also be beneficial to get more opinions than one. I've seen a lot of doctors, and they all agreed with my diagnosis.

Psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist.

It's "their" label, and they're the ones who give it out.

Yeah, the therapist that said it doesn't have the right to give out official dxs, he has to run it by the psychiatrist. I'm pretty good at talking to the therapist in his office, but he eventually picked up I was having social skills problems, and what confirmed it was feedback from my relatives that was like "she doesn't do small talk!" and "if it's not about birds, she doesn't care about it" (actually I like Sonic too... many of my relatives don't know that because when I was younger I got made fun of for liking Pokemon in high school) that made him wonder.

I don't joke around, about stuff, like that.

Interesting...did she say how she could tell? I've never heard anything like this before.

Who can make an official diagnosis, depends on the state/country you liv ein. IN the Netherlands, only psychologists and psychiatrists can make an official diagnosis. IN other countries, licensed social workers, etc., can also make diagnoses.

Agreed. I've had people tell me in the past that they believe I might have AS, but I don't take it as any form of diagnosis because they aren't fully qualified. That said, I'll be going for neurological testing with a specialist next week for a full diagnosis.
