Looking at paintings
What I dislike:
Myself
When I lose my self-control (Here I mean losing my self-control in a bad way, rather than losing it in a good way)
The fact that I have 'lots of acquaintances, but no real friends'
Eye contact
Hot, humid climates (Such as the one in which I currently live)
Religious fervour
Time management
Logic problems
Romance novels
Tobacco smoke
Cosmetics
The soles of bare feet (Unless they are the feet of one whom I am -ahem- intimate... with)
Little kids, especially infants
Being ignored
People who repeatedly make wrong decisions and keep claiming they did the right thing (A reason I included myself on the 'dislike' list).
Inconsiderate people (Yet another reason I included 'myself' on the list of dislikes)
Hypocrisy (Once again, a reason I included 'myself'.)
Likes
• The patterns, shapes and sounds in a real fire ~ either a garden bonfire or a coal/log fire in the house.
• Symmetry that is not quite perfect ~ perfect symmetry can be boring.
• Patterns in falling Snow and the patterns of deep settled snowdrifts
• Real ~ not synthetic ~ materials
• The sound of the house being vacuumed (this is difficult because if there is other noise in the house as well this becomes one of my dislikes)
• Patterns of footsteps
• Real Time Strategy computer games ~ particularly those where the landscape is not obviously populated by characters ~ I enjoy the strategy but also the layers of ambient sounds and the fact that I am in a world governed by logic. Some, such as ‘Homeworld’ have some particularly pleasing patterns of movement and shapes.
• Opera ~ particularly Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’ which is riddled with meaning, patterns, ritual and number ‘games’. Verdi’s ‘Otello’ is another favourite (I am not generally keen on Verdi but the music of this opera is perfect at illuminating the complex character interactions).
• Wagner’s Music Drama ~ much for the same reason as above only more so
• Two or more layers of contrary motion where one is moving faster that the other
• The sound and movements produced by the wind in trees ~ especially small almost imperceptible movements of trees in the distance
• Any repeating ‘leitmotif’
• Patterns of sound, light and movement in running water
• Driving on long journeys ~ the rhythm and patterns made by motorway bridges, vehicles moving at different speeds and in different directions
• The patterns made by Windows Media Player visualisations
• Crunchy gravel paths
• The patterns of sound made by shoes being repaired ~ a mixture of machine & hand tools
• The patterns of sound made by someone cutting keys
• Bach Fugues
• The sound and shapes of the ocean ~ particularly the rhythm of breaking waves
Dislikes
• Loud, chaotic sound
• Loud voices ~ it is sometimes difficult for me to judge whether people are angry or just speaking loudly
• Any situation where lots of people are talking at once ~ a nightmare ~ I am completely lost here
• Social situations where the structure is not obvious ~ i.e. most, although I am not too ill at ease when the situation is formal and structured
• Mixing too many synthetic materials with natural ones
• Arguments ~ again a structured debate on an interesting subject is fine ~ even enjoyable. I am talking here about people losing their temper, which makes it difficult for me to follow a logical pattern
• The sort of joke that has no reason for existence other than to deceive or confuse e.g. most ‘wind ups’ ~ although ‘April Fool’ jokes are usually fine as it is a ritual. I usually stick to the old standards “Your shoe lace is undone” ~ not very funny I know but the silliness makes me laugh.
• Telephone conversation ~ interestingly I have done telesales and I am fine with structured business calls ~ every other call confuses me as I never know when the conversation will finish. This causes great stress.
• Difficult social situations where empathy or comfort is required of me ~ I never quite know what is the right thing to do
• Posing for photographs ~ I cannot make my face smile to order and usually end up pulling a rather bizarre grimace
• Eye contact ~ in order to get on in life I have taught myself to do this but I do it consciously whereas other people seem to do it naturally. In situations where I know it is a definite requirement I am never sure whether I have judged it right and sometimes feel I am staring too much.
• Polite small talk/conversation ~ I never know how to end conversations and frequently just walk away in desperation. I try to make it look natural so I have no idea if people think me rude ~ very stressful.
• Dinner parties where conversations cross over the table and over other conversations etc. (How do people do that?)
• My wife’s cuckoo clock ~ it has a recording of running water, birdsong & a cuckoo but it is all in one layer of sound. It also has a light sensor to stop it cuckooing at night which I have permanently covered with blue~tack so it never cuckoos
