The Charity model (Autism Speaks particularly) used to get a lot of airtime here, though this seems to have diminished in the past year, and the dark side seems much better understood now (not just here).

I like the rights based model the best. The rights based model is the model that I live by.

Situation: Young women using a wheelchair
Rights-based Model: "When she gets a job, her employer will have to build accessible rooms. This is her right!"
Bitter reality: The employer knows he would need to invest quite a lot of extra money if she gets the job, so if he can choose someone else, she won't get the job.

This is how extra rights backfire. I don't like it but we won't change the society only by this kind of laws.
