Hi,

Came across on Maladaptive Daydreaming. Combined with the mentioned repetitive movements, I see no difference between this and stimming. When I stimmed as a child, I would often be daydreaming about video games, tv shows etc. The stimming almost heightened my imagination and was well stimulating.

I think the researcher has stumbled across a group of people stimming and put his own label on it. Although apparently the symptoms of this can be caused by trauma and not necessarily Autism etc. Although in some cases and this is just my opinion neurodiverse people like us are more likely to remember some childhood events as traumatic because of our innate sensitivity.

Anyway it's the same with Stereotypic Movement Disorder, which is stimming in my opinion, though according that can be diagnosed alone in DSM 5.
