ICICLES!

I live in a 'downtown' apartment in the Interior of Alaska (small antiquanted Alaskan village, specifically). Anyway, there are icicles growing from the roof of my 3 story apartment building (built prior to WWII) - I live on the top story. The icicles are ~ 5 feet long and glitter in the short day length sun (less than 9 hours and dropping quickly) - beautiful fractals. Icicles everywhere along the roof immediately visible from my windows. Sometimes I am just transfixed by icicles. Each one is like a prism. Plus, the field behind my building is pure snow. Often, lately, there has been ice fog in the mornings - glittery crystals suspended in the air.

Just thought I'd share the image with all of you! Wish you were here.

Sounds pretty. Sometimes I get really neat icicles where I live, but I bet they're nothing like the kind you must have.

Not to mention......if a giant icicle happens falls from 3 stories up onto an unsuspecting human they will be impaled, most likely fatally. This has actually happened in Alaska! But, this is unlikely since the temperature is bitter cold. If/when this does occur, it's in the spring when the ice is melty.

Just a thought. Also implies the building is not well insulated in the ceiling so heat is escaping through the roof, causing snow to melt and runoff. But I still love my antiquated apartment. I doubt any person would be walking directly under the eaves far below either.

Still love icicles.

I'm actually more interested in your old building; I love old buildings; they have such charm for me; I can walk into an old building and practically feel the history...

But the icicles sounds wondrous also... I have a 532nm hand laser that I use for pointing at stuff in the sky during star parties... I'd love to fire it at those icicles and see how they light up.

Oh! I'll bet you see the aurora up there not infrequently, no? I've never seen it. :( One of these days I'm going to take a trip to Canada or Alaska just to see the aurora...

Good fortune,

- Icarus wouldn't mind dying via 3-foot icicle...

My mind is filled with the beautiful image of light refracted about a room by icicles.

Thank you :)

Wow, I can see it my imagination. Beautiful! I really like winter scapes. Now I have an image of an unsuspecting human being impaled and staining the snow red. Gory. 8O

No fair its still way to warm for them down here in PA, I used to put red dye/food coloring on em so it looked like blood was seeping from the house and freezing. I'd die up there I get cold if its below 50 out.

You know LabPet - I don't even like snow and your description sounds so beautiful to me. I can imagine it in my mind.

When they form here in Helsinki they are quickly knocked down. Beautiful, yes, but dangerous when they fall and they are a strain on roof gutters.
