Did anyone here go to speech theraphy growing up? I did. I may have had problems because I was painfully shy and I couldn't hear as well. I had to have tubes and such.
I was shy so I was pretty mute growing up. My sisters did all my talking.
I have no problems with talking now. There are a few words I have a hard time pronoucing but everyone does :-) This may take me off as having AS.

I had to have speech therapy when I was young because the school didn't like the fact that I had a New York accent. So they were trying for me to get rid of the accent. I still have the accent but not as bad as before. I can't believe they did this. I grew up in Oregon and never been to New York. My dad was born there though but believe it or not, he doesn't really have a strong accent.

I can relate. My mom is from South Africa and she has a strong accent. Sometimes I talk like her, it was more apparent when I was young. I was shy.
lol...

Did you actually have a New York accent (ex. the distinctive "au" sound in words like "caught" and "coffee") or were not you able to produce an "r"? Lots of kids experience difficulty producing "r" that has has nothing to do with dialectical differences.

I spent a couple of years going though all sorts of tests as a child, because my parents never knew
why I was always misbehaving, I could talk but my pronunciation was terrible, so I was tested for
hearing, and epilepsy, but the results were negative. It was always assumed that I was dyslexic, or
had ADHD, I had very poor learning skills in school settings, and would be off in my own world, usually
getting into things, or being disruptive in class, I was given speech and occupational therapy which I
think may have helped some. Having grown up with a speech impediment, I still have some trouble
with pronunciation, and a slight stutter when stressed, I still find it hard to speak verbally unless its
with people I know.

An example of words I still have a little trouble with:
Aluminum which sounds like Aloominumin
Hospital which sounds like HoSHPITall

I had speech therapy from preschool until halfway through high school, due to difficulties with pronouncing words.

Did this have anything to do with you learning to play the Clarinet?

No, I learned to play the clarinet because of a strong interest in music.

I went to speech therapy when I was in elementary school for what they called a lazy tounge. I didn't pronouce my 'th's' right I prononced them like 'f' instead. (3 prononced like FREE). I would say sammich for sandwich, and nakin for napkin. I slurred my words, and sometimes I still do.

I had to take speech classes for only a few years in elementary school.

Always thought of it as a way to get out of class.

I did, from K to 3rd grade.

When I started talking at 4 1/2, I had a light lisp and had difficulties with r, s and t's.
My r's were more like a w,
My s's and t's were more like a th.
Also I have and still do not as much, slur words a bit, also mis-pronounce new words often....
