No, I've never been able to. If I hit the button it doesn't matter if I've prepared myself for it or not, I always lose my mind from the noise. I lose my balance and fall off what I'm standing on. Done it too many times as a kid, now I'm scared to death of them as an adult. I take a big risk by not testing it, but I think I will ask my wife to do it while I plug my ears.

My advice would be to wear earplugs while you test the smoke alarm.

You're kidding, right!?!?!?

Well, I have to replace the batteries every year, so I know the sensor likely works(they are more likely to give false alarms), I know they can make a lot of noise, and I know they are powered.

What does the test button really test anyway?

My flatmates managed to test my smoke-alarm several times during the year: by smoking, by burning food, by overheating hairdryers and so forth.

Yes, either management or I (sometimes management fail to get to it) test my smoke alarms twice a year. I have one in my bedroom and one near the kitchen.

I find the one near the kichen to be a nuisance though as anytime I make a dish that creates smoke or steam it sets the blasted thing off (yes, I run a vent fan). Who ever decided on the placement of this alarm wasn't thinking as it is right in the airflow path, thus attracting the steam.

As the alarms are connected to a central system management or security (I live in a secured block of flats) can see who has an alarm going and with in a few minutes they Gestapo knock on your door. Recently management informed us we were subject to being assessed a fee if the alarm goes off after hours (after six in the evening) or weekends (and it isn't an emergency). So far I've been lucky as I haven't been charged for the few times it blared since then.

I'm not fond of the sound the alarm makes, but I do like to know it is in working order.
