I'm not buying this.

What you don't buy of this?

To me it just seems to be a mixture of stereotype and "aspies aren't actually smart, any advantage they might have is really a disability".

I agree. I am diagnosed AS and I am capable of more than "simple cognition". I also am a very fast reader and tend toward hyperlexia and DO memorize quite easily, but my cognition is a strength, not a weakness.

Having taken an actual IQ test hasn't done anything to rid me of my initial misgivings about the IQ reflecting "intelligence." I have too many "coping" mechanisms I've developed that don't lend themselves to measurement. For example, I'm a highly associative thinker, but that aspect of my cognitive profile doesn't show up on paper.

I also agree with this. IQ tests may not always reflect a person's abilities and I do tend to think we place too much emphasis on them.

It's interesting that you say this. I think it may be somewhat common in AS. There are actually modified versions the WAIS, WISC, and WMS (wechsler memory scales) that tests for this specifically by using multiple choice rather than forcing free recall.

Temple Grandin (not AS, I know) described her thought process as primarily "associative," although, unlike me, she's more visual and can manipulate images in her head better than I can. I tell people I have a "Google brain," which is also one of the reasons I take longer to come to conclusions.

I just took the regular WAIS-IV and it pretty much only tested auditory recall and my ability to remember spoken sequences of numbers. I suck at that.

Didn't know about the "modified" versions, however.

I think what they do is measure the skills that come into play most often while enrolled in the Western school system, which is why it can predict "academic" success. It's correlated with "life success" because people who do well in school tend to go on to get advanced degrees; HOWEVER, studies have shown that people who have average IQs, but who have advanced degrees, enjoy the same amount of "success" as people with high IQs with the same degrees.

I believe IQ tests can give you an idea of some of your strengths and weaknesses, but it's not the whole story, and there are certain abilities that are just as important, but for which science doesn't have an objective metric (i.e. "emotional intelligence").

Personally, I learned I have poor working memory and processing speed, which goes a long way towards explaining my crappy math. By researching "help" for students with these disabilities, I also learned I had instituted many of the recommended strategies on my own without having to be told.

I may be dumb, but I'm a highly creative dunce.

My problem here is the same problems I have with ADD, ADHD, or any other spectrum is that people are trying to make us all the same. You can take two people with aspergers and they will have different strong and weak points. Same goes with ADD, ADHD, etc. It's why they are on a spectrum becasue just like NT's are not all the same we are not all the same. Just becasue one person AS like to know ever thing there is to know about outerspace does not the next person will.

Just because one AS person is really good and likes math does not mean the next AS person does. I really enjoy learn about outerspace and any thing to do with flying. Does that mean the next person with AS or ADD or ADHD or Fragile X syndrome, or whatever it is someone has.

We are not all Albert Einstein and at times I'm kind of sick of the whole we all have to be Albert Einstein to be on the spectrum or that we all have to be really dumb to have ADD or whatever Hollywood likes to throw at us.

We really have no idea if there was anything wrong with Einstein at all and we never will really know unless someone can travel into the past and test him.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is can I just be me and not be compared to ever one else thats on the damn spectrum. I mean really I don't even like that they call those things spectrums.

I have a really big like for Outerspace and anything to do with airplanes I have aspergers how ever mild it is or not I have ADD and I have Dyslexia and I have anxiety issues I have social problems and at the end of day I'm just me. I'm not like the next person who will post in this thread. They are going to be different from me with different problems and issues. So the whole eilite thing I can and do live with out it because I really just don't care what people think about my IQ or what some test says. It will never show my like outerspace and airplanes and how much I like to learn about that stuff. Tests say a lot of things. Some guy back when I was young said because I could not say my sisters name just right that I did not know her name or who she was. I just had problems saying the letter L I don't have the problem any more. I got that fixed back in first grade.

^ It's a spectrum because there are so many varying degrees and differences and that's also why you don't need to compare. But you are probably comparing and that's why you're feeling frustrated. We all compare at times. Don't know why. Just human nature I guess.

You're not dumb or a dunce. The IQ test can't measure your thinking style correctly. I took the WAIS and WMS (Wechsler Memory Scale) a one month ago. I hit the ceiling on the WAIS WMI (Working Memory Index) but was around 17th percentile on the WMS. How do you interpret that? You can't.

Agreed if we were all like Einstein there would be more problems. Most people dont know any thing about how he functioned out of the "lab". He had a lot of help but thats history now. I have a high I.Q. but I would give any one 20 points off it to function better and to comunicate better with the average joe. What good is a hight I.Q. number if you cant comuicate you're thoughts. The last test given by New York state when I was a teen was 155 but you look at my spelling and gramar you would not belive it.

So in other words I.Q. is worthless as a test in real life. Genius my :!: :!: :!: I have to be reminded to pay bills, feed the animals, put gas in the car, ect.

The other thing is what does having a high I.Q. and being really good at math have to do with anything? I mean I don't really care what my I.Q. is because there is a whole lot of other things that I have to deal with. If it turns out that I have a high I.Q. in the subject I enjoy fine. But like you said I would give that up just to not have the problems I have as long as I can still be me. We all have different levels of I.Q. some are really really great with math some are really great with I don't know writing. Some are not as good. But when it comes to what we really like and in a sense we are all a Genius and I.Q. tests can't and will not show that.

Also at the age of 31 many of those tests are amied at kids so that's not really going to tell the whole story for people in there 30's and above.

I agree, having a high IQ is pretty worthless when you still have low emotional intelligence and poor social skills, either of which is more important then IQ in the modern world. If you have trouble communicating your own thoughts NT's will still think you lack intelligence anyway, because communicating their thoughts comes naturally whereas we have to think about everything we say.

Well I also have poor working memory and low PSI, yet I'm create at math. Hmm...

I thought Asperger's means normal iq and up... I personally have an iq of 144.

I'm pretty good at math, science, and art.

Well, it depends on the interpretation of the criteria, but yes, that is one interpretation.

I'm like Einstein in that I'm bad at math too. Well, I'm not bad just uninterested and I do better when on ADHD medication.

My IQ is average so I barely have to think about it.

I'm also bad at math. According to IQ tests I therefore have an IQ around 75 to 85.
Nonetheless, I study at uni and am almost always one of the best at exams and other things in my study field.
So I guess those IQ tests don't measure my particular form of intelligence.
