It's not like we don't have the money to air some TV spots or get ads in major magazines. Why aren't autism education causes getting the positive word out there the way that eradication causes are?

It seems like it'd be pretty easy to do, but I don't see anyone actually making an effort.

I would expect it to do more harm than good. I doubt that any two people on the planet would agree on what the message should be. I doubt that I would be happy with anything that could fit in a sound bite.

How can you summarize something like this?

"No Autistics Allowed" (Michelle Dawson)

Maybe he did. I don't know :)

PSA's on TV are SO expensive! Who would sponsor them?

I don't have any money for PSAs and I wouldn't know what to put in them, since I know I'm a sample size of one. Figuring out what to say can be hard, since there are so many issues to address. And I don't have the bandwidth to watch videos on the internet.

But I did watch this one, and it made me cry. Beautiful. (By the NAS in the UK, posted on Socrates' blog).

We do make our own PSA's:
The No Myths PSA was made together with The Ausitsic Self-Advocacy Network.

I go to radio stations for the candle project and they donate air time to do contests with the candles and provide free PSA's. Also general ads. At first I was nervous but I am a good radio voice I am told and am good at presenting the idea.

We do make our own PSAs. However since we lack the funding of groups like Autism Speaks, we don't have nearly as much airtime.

As much as my parents loathe me for not being NT, I still know they're leaving quite a large sum to me. I do not intend for anything I say to come off the wrong way at all, but I've lived life well-off financially and have, for the past couple of years, dreamed of starting some sort of PSA-initiative, some sort of advocacy program; I have a long way to go, still, it's only the beginnings of a dream, but it could go someplace! :) Funding is a crucial part and large hurdle in getting national PSAs out there, so if in any way I could contribute to the founding of better understanding and awareness of AS, I'd go out of my way to do so.

Speaking of airtime... Guess who just signed on w/Oprah's company for her own show:

Jenny McCarthy

This is the last thing the autism community needs is the wrong message being spoonfed to bon bon-eating, daytime TV-watching, yuppie housewives who believe anything they hear as gospel, and seem not to have an intelligent or independent thought in their heads.

/is a little miffed about that

The problem is that donating PSAs will not do you any good. While radio and television broadcasters claim to donate time to PSAs, they often dump them on times where no one is watching. I have seen hours of television on prime time and NOT ONE PSA. Let when occasionally flipping on a broadcast channel on a Saturday or Sunday I see them in a ad break on of a E/I kids show. The similar thing applies for radio.

If you buy ad time for a PSA, then your PSA is no different from a commercial because PSA's by law are not supposed to be paid for.

I keep seeing "we don't have the money", but why DON'T we? There's thousands of people just on this site. I look over there and I see 26,757 members, with 287 currently on just at this moment.

Where are our leaders? Why aren't we exposing lies in areas other than small videos on Youtube? Where are our magazine ads? Where are our interviews on Oprah? Why hasn't anyone hit McCarthy in the face yet? --oh wait, that last one's just wishful thinking. But the rest is doable, so why aren't we motivated?

I could start my own blog, if I could find a free programme.

But the problem with online stuff is that there's so much of it already, and too many cooks, as they say. People tend to shut it off because anyone can get online and say any fool thing they want, so people don't take *any* of it seriously.

We need magazine ads. We need tv spots, and radio. We need to appear on talk shows. There's enough of us, and we have enough money. So why isn't it happening?
