I've been getting further into crust punk - some of the new bands are really fantastic - it's as heavy as any metal (many cross over into sludge territory), but a lot of it is as emotive as screamo. Here's some stuff:

I like a lot of crusty stuff too but my heart really belongs to screamo/skramz. Bands like Totem Skin (https://totemskin.bandcamp.com/) straddle both sub genres very well.

The Offenders, Killeen Texas, 1985, (Six years before Killeen got it's 15 Minutes of Fame as being the home of the Luby's Cafeteria Mass Shooting) Also, RIP Mikey Offender (2007) and Tony Offender (2012)

I always thought it was funny how those Texas bands like MDC, The Dicks, and Big Boys were all gay communists. I guess it just goes to show how much punk is a rebellion against one's surrounding environment.
