Why is that phrase offensive to people? I've never quite understood that...Because to me, it means "even though you have some faults I still love you no matter what"

I wouldn't find it offensive.

I would be sad and flattered if it is told to me by an ex-girlfriend. It would means she still has feelings for me--but that the relationship could never work out despite her love for me.
