Would you rather have a friend who, like you, had social problems or some kind of social skill defying disorder and was someone you could be closer to because you both have problems in life?

My best friend is the opposite of Asperger's. He's extremely socially skilled. He's also dyslexic. He's smart and knowledgeable, but has no formal education beyond high school.

My first impression is yes. However, a reassuring personality who could perhaps give me some beneficial tips on relating to the outside world could be helpful, too.

Depends on what it was, and on the particular case. I tend to get along well with people with OCD, and some people with Asperger's, but there have been several people with general Autism who I've found very difficult to be around and talk to. Basically, if it's so severe that they can't compensate for my social problems, then no. Otherwise, in some cases yes.

I tend to become friends with people who are outside the mainstream social norm but in lots of different ways. I think it maybe that such people are alot less judgemental and value itellect over looks or social skills.

I have had some success being friends with some "outsiders"...ie punks,goths,lesbians...
but even in these groups there tends to be a "group think" that ends up excluding me...as soon as the group tries and change me(ie...generaly more open mined but still feel need to conform to looking or acting like what ever that group feels makes them ,them)This just annoys me and I run for the hills again....

I found it suprisingly easy to be excepted in "forced groups"...ie...psyc wards, CD treatment,AA groups....for awhile, but never seem to maintain the relationships because once we are on the outside, my "differences" seem to bother them and vice-versa...kind of sad :?

One of my best friends is 'emotionally brilliant'--she's one of those people that everyone seems to like, the sort that people come to to cry on shoulders and whatnot. In general, my friends tend to hang around on the social outskirts and be quite intelligent as well as very accepting of eccentricities. Most of them do not have any kind of mental issues, however.

My best friend away from the computer is NT through and through. He is rather popular, also. We have a lot of the same ideas and such... and have known each other since we were in kindergarten.
