In just two weeks' time, I'll be coming off a road trip to the Thousand Islands region of NY State with the local Young Urban Professionals Meetup group. While I'm excited about going somewhere I've heard about but have never really been, I do have my concerns about what to expect during that time.

For example, even though I've offered to carpool, should I pay gas myself or have everybody riding with me contribute? I ask this because everybody in the group pays their own way, whether it's dinner out or other leisurely pursuits.

If you've been in this position before, how did you get through it?

I've never carpooled so maybe I'm wrong about this, but I would imagine everyone chips in with a contribution to gas expenses, similar to if there's a meal and everyone's paying their own share?

It would be fair if everyone contributed to gas expenses--as gas is expensive.

I know, in the UK, gas is twice as expensive as it is in the US. I've seen $10 a gallon before.

I went for a meetup once and was quiet nervous everybody could make out the difference
and they started hounding me with weird comments
i stood out from the crowd it was a bad experience

i suggest you pay for the gas if you pay they will start using you more
